Went perch fishing with my grandson today by the boat launch, caught a few. Couldn't believe all the pelicans that were there begging for fish. Some looked sick and saw three dead ones. Is this the new normal for that area?

Website says "Visitors are welcome on the refuge seven days a week, during daylight hours." But, on a Sunday, the gate is closed with no maps or directions for how to access trails.

Consider using Alltrails for hiking but the only official trail is Boy Scout Rd. Not sure about closed gate unless you mean the HQ.

I'm confused it looks like there's two section of this park. The section to the east looks like it's now houses or a subdivision ? Is this correct o4 was the other section homes at one point but gone (or so new that Google maps not updated)? Thanks

There are several areas of the refuge. The headquarters has several historic buildings and a visitor center open Thursday thru Saturday. The other areas are between residential areas and the lake.

Can you fish? Is a license required?

Scott Glanton | Sep 23, 2020
Richard Frazier | Sep 23, 2020

Yes you can fish in and all around the Big Branch Wildlife Refuge/Management Area. Yes, 16 - 60 years of age must purchase a license. 60 and oldermust get a license, but I believe its free. At the end of Lake Rd. in Lacombe the road extends out to Lake Pontchatrain and you can fish, crab, ski, bird watch, and just before turning onto Lake Rd. at U.S. 190 there is a bait shop, Bayou Adventures, that also rents canoes and kayaks, and there is a deacent deli. I hope you enjoy your day out there.

What are the hours that the boardwalk is open?

Rebecca Trosclair | Sep 24, 2019
Randy Rentrop | Sep 24, 2019

It's open day and night. There are no lights at night. Please do not go alone it's away from public

Would love to come out and do the trails. Is it pet (dog) friendly, as he loves to hike with me. Leashed, of course.

Gloria Worthington | Sep 24, 2019
Margie Vicknair-Pray | Sep 24, 2019

Leashed and don't let him wander near waterways. Alligators love to eat dogs!

Is this trail suitable for overnight backpacking?

Darren Getty | Sep 24, 2019
Margie Vicknair-Pray | Sep 24, 2019

No
