Popped up over here to bring my cuz some lunch and the staff is mad rude and disrespectful. I think they are former shelter clients from their ghetto and 'hood' attitudes. The DHS police there is like GED recipients with badges and no guns and totally unprofessional.

It's okay, what do you expect it's a shelter. Although there are prisons in NYS that are more modernize and cleaner, but everybody there works and have to keep the place clean as a community. Well that is not case here and things can get disorganized without care. The staff seems attentive in their jobs. the security provided by NYPD's DHS. They do a great job under the conditions including this COVID-19 new normal. The food is, well if you hungry it will suffice but if you have a particular food you crave, you better eat at or take out your favorite food spot before coming here. I haven't spoken with my case worker yet being that I work and the hours they have set up appointments don't fit with my schedule, it has been hard to sit down with one, but they are constantly looking to meet so no lag on there part. It's definitely a lot better in terms of bed, shelter is not old and cold like another place just 5 min walk away. I can sleep and not freeze in the winter 🥶 so overall this place is okay. Maybe if they gave each unit an outlet for your electronics and made each unit like capsule or open cell like area with enough room for a locker, bed, and maybe even a chair and fold out table that would be a step in the right direction. You want to give as much in a little space as can be reasonable, to help that person feel just a little more dignity or secure in there time of struggle. There are so many more things that this location and many others can improve upon or implement in the future planning, but this Shelter is a good model for such planning. If you need to or you want to get back on your independence and find housing this is definitely a great place to start. Like any place if you keep to your business and keep positive you almost likely to avoid those negative elements. But that is on you.

In NYC you must sign up at the Men's Shelter Intake Center on E. 31st. Street and 1 Ave. Right next door to Bellevue Hospital. Make sure you have what documents or identity cards needed to process you. You will be ask a set of questions to which after you will be given further information on where you are to go next. Note: if you attempt to go to a shelter before going here, that shelter will tell you to first go to the Intake Center for Men in order to get processed, if you have a referral or know of a bed open at your desired shelter, you can let the intake center staff or the next shelter you are placed in of your preferred shelter. Just something I wish I knew before going into it, hopefully it will help you get what you need faster.
Depends on you and your location, When you are applying for Benefits, you will have a choice, of course they will prompt you to go to the nearest one. And now that things are done online seemlessly these days. The Access HRA app will guide you on where to go. I hope this helps you.
You can find housing on your own or you'll assign a Housing Specialist to do the task. Just have a job with 4 current pay stubs, have a savings account, or being on government assistance (SSI, SAD or both). You'll also being assign to a Case worker that does the ILL (Independent Living Plan)!
