The only reason I'm leaving 3 stars is because I can't prove my suspicions or other peoples' similar experiences. Until we went here, I was skeptical of the claims of randomly killed and improperly relocated lost pets but now I have to wonder. A couple of staff here acted helpful but are selectively polite and I question how much they'll actually help us even if one of our cats does get turned in here. On the surface they did their job and said they'd do what they could to help us find our lost cats. They helped us fill out lost reports and offered to take any pictures we had of them. They let us look at all the cats that were brought in and were happy to answer my wife's questions. They did not seem eager to help me though, and responded curtly and with silent stoic head nods to the very few questions I had. I can do without the dirty looks and insensitivity when we're stressed out from looking for our lost pets, especially when I've barely said anything or asked any questions. If I hadn't brought my distressed wife in with me they probably would have been more snide and cold to me than they were. I also overheard one of them make a backhanded remark to the other about another concerned customer who she had just gotten off the phone with. To be fair, they were perfectly pleasant with my wife to her face even though they talk behind clients' backs and did not reciprocate the politeness that I at least forced myself to show these shallow people. I'm sure they're going to leave a pseudo-professional response in an attempt to discredit my review. Based on how I've personally heard them complain about worried pet owners checking in through a phone call (right in front of other worried pet owners nonetheless) and talked down to others via their reviews, I can tell that selective treatment of people and their missing pets is an ongoing issue here. They seem to prioritize people who want to adopt over the ones who want to reunite with their lost pets. I've noticed a trend of negative reviews from people whose pets have had a run-in with this place. We thankfully got one of our cats back without their help but now I'm worried about what will happen to our other cat if she does end up here. We are trying other sources to find her. The lost and stray cats that aren't on the adoption floor are kept in smaller cages and in questionable conditions. Many of them were meowing sadly and seemed scared. Some of them had little water or space to move around. I understand that they have limited resources to help these animals but it seems like all but the most helpless of cats might actually be better off being stray or lost than in here.

I found a stray dog wandering around my property on Friday, August 12th. He was between a busy street and my gate. By the time we got him safely into the house, the shelter and animal control (only for injured or aggressive dogs) were closed. He spent the night with us and we fell in love with him. Needless to say, I had to do the right thing so we posted his picture on facebook "Lost dogs of Council Bluffs" and I took him to Midlands as soon as they opened on Saturday morning. As much as I wanted to keep him I thought returning him to his family was best. They said they have a three day hold on strays to give the family time to find him. I told them that if nobody claimed him, I would adopt him. I called numerous times to check on him but the shelter manager (Jenny) never returned any calls. I went there on Wednesday (after the three day hold) with adoption application in hand and they told me that he still needed his rabies vaccine and had to be neutered. I offered to take him to my vet the next day but they said he was now their property and I just had to wait. I called Jenny once again and offered to foster him until their vet could complete everything and she once again never returned my call. This is the most mismanaged shelter in the area. Only through my persistence did I finally end up with him. If you find a stray, and you want to adopt it, please find a different shelter. This place has no compassion for people that would make great pet owners. The job of a shelter should be to adopt out pets as quickly as possible to good families.

After losing two of our senior citizen cats to old age we visited "just to take a look"...and came home with Marty! The shelter is clean and welcoming, and the staff are so friendly and caring toward the animals. Please consider adopting a pet that needs a forever family - you will be richly rewarded.

So, I got my welsh corgi today, and I can tell you that the majority of the employees here were super helpful and you can tell how much love they have for their saved animals, and how much respect they have for them. I love my tanjiro. He is so hyper and amazing but they gave me so much advice and even told me to call if I had any more questions or more advice. So that right there was amazing to me. They want their pets to go to a home where they will be loved and flourish and it’s a big responsibility. So that being said. I loved my experience there and I had a great time picking out my corgi. And being able to rely on them for help and advice. Thank you so much to all of you who work and volunteer at this amazing place. You all got big hearts. Also tonjiro gave us his crazy eyes hahaha he so cute.

My cat was picked up Tuesday. I didn't get message till to late. How much is the cost per day?

The cost is broken down into Impound (which is currently a one time fee of $50.00) and Boarding (which is currently $12.50 per day).

I have an awesome place and fenced in yard..when looking for a loving home for a shelter dog I run into fees from 3 to 400 dollars...are you guys serious ...I don't think your in it for the poor animals..😕

Kyle Key | Sep 21, 2017
Midlands Humane Society | Sep 20, 2020

I think you may us confused with another humane society. Most of our dog adoption fees range between $200 and $300. Sometimes they are less than that, and if there are puppies they might adopt out for $350. We also run adoption specials from time to time with discounted adoption fees. Please keep in mind that all the dogs we adopt out are spayed or neutered, microchipped, treated for fleas/ticks, heartworm tested and vaccinated per age requirements. In addition, we have (in many cases) nursed sick or injured dogs back to health and worked on some behavior modification techniques on dogs that need to gain confidence in public. For puppies, we have cared for these animals for several weeks and socialized them in a safe environment. If you acquire an animal elsewhere, please be aware that you would typically spend far more doing all the above treatments in addition to spending time taking your new pet to have all these things done. We hope this helps. Thank you.

First of all thank you for your concern and compassion for the future care of your cats/kitties and I am truly sorry that you are not in the position to care for them any longer. You most certainly take them to the Midlands H. S., and they will be in the best of hands. Your offer to make a donation to Midlands is not necessary, but at the same time any monetary contribution will be very beneficial for the continued care of all homeless animals. Prayers, and Blessings for you always. 🙏🐶🐺🐱
