They stop serving the public at 4:15pm, not 4:45. If your going to leave work early to conduct your business, plan accordingly.

How do I register a kayak that was purchased with cash at Walmart and the receipt has long been lost? My granddaughter did not realize she needed a registration.

Sonya Bollin | Sep 19, 2021
Ohio DNR Division of Parks & Watercraft - Boat Registrations | Sep 19, 2021

The kayak may have come with an owner's manual that might have the manufacturer's Statement of Origin. To get a new registration, you need to fill out sections 1 & 2 of the Certified Watercraft Registration Application. If you have no other paperwork, you can fill out Section 3 of this form and get it notarized before you visit a boat registration agent. You will need to locate the Hull Identification number (usually etched into the back end of the kayak). Many of the links to the information you need are found on our website at https://ohiodnr.gov/wps/portal/gov/odnr/rules-and-regulations/rules-and-regulations-by-division/state-parks-and-watercraft/boating-rules/01-register-ohio-boat

Is overnight fishing by boat allowed on Delaware Lake?

Elite Electrical Services | Sep 20, 2019
Kevin Merchant | Sep 20, 2019

Yes. Most of Ohio's public fishing areas allow night time fishing unless there are site specific rules and regulations. If your boat is 12ft or shorter, 1 white light is all that is required in Ohio. If your boat is larger than that then you must have 1 red light and 1 green light on the bow and 1 white light at the stern. These lights help other boats to tell the direction of travel if moving and what side of your boat they are on. This old saying will help you remember. Red, right, returning. Green, left, leaving. When going UPSTREAM. The opposite when going Downstream. When coming upstream into a port there are channel markers for night time navigation. The saying will serve you here as well. If you are inbound the red markers mark the edge of safe depths to navigate through. So, you keep the red markers to the right or starboard side of your boat and stay to the left of the green ones to stay in the channel that is safe for navigation. These have numbers. Odd is inbound even is out

It depends on horsepower of the outboard motor and length of the boat. Our main office number is 1-877-426-2837. The registration agents there can help with the details.

Can you drink while on the boat at the portage lakes

Ronald Gray | Sep 19, 2021
Ohio DNR Division of Parks & Watercraft - Boat Registrations | Sep 19, 2021

We recommend staying hydrated while boating, as being on a boat has some hidden stressors, like sun, wind, and waves, that make your body work a little harder. Water is the best hydrator. If you are asking about drinking alcohol, public and overt consumption of alcohol is prohibited in Ohio State Parks, and that includes the lakes. The law about operating a watercraft under the influence of drugs or alcohol is explained at https://codes.ohio.gov/ohio-revised-code/section-1547.11.

Can I register a boat in ohio if I live in Ky and the title is from Ky?

Chris Hoffman | Sep 19, 2021
Ohio DNR Division of Parks & Watercraft - Boat Registrations | Sep 19, 2021

I don't believe that is possible. You will want to direct your question to a Watercraft Office. https://ohiodnr.gov/wps/portal/gov/odnr/rules-and-regulations/rules-and-regulations-by-division/state-parks-and-watercraft/boating-rules/01-register-ohio-boat

The boat I purchased was registered in Ohio but I live in Florida and purchased it in Florida. How do I secure a lost Registration so I can register the boat in Florida?

Peggy Fisher | Sep 19, 2020
Ohio DNR Division of Parks & Watercraft - Boat Registrations | Sep 19, 2021

This topic can become complicated very quickly based on proof of ownership. A copy of the registration can be purchased for $4 but only by the owner of the boat. If the boat has a title, then the owner is the person listed on the title. Assuming you have already spoken to the boating agency in Florida, I recommend you call an Ohio Watercraft office (https://ohiodnr.gov/wps/portal/gov/odnr/discover-and-learn/safety-conservation/about-odnr/division-parks-watercraft/contact-parks-watercraft/2-wc-offices) to speak to someone about the paperwork you have/need.

I am going boating on a 20' pontoon on Portage Lakes and taking my 2 grandchildren that are babies. Are they required to wear a life jacket?

Sheri Clemence | Sep 19, 2020
Ohio DNR Division of Parks & Watercraft - Boat Registrations | Sep 19, 2020

We recommend that everyone wear their life jacket. Based on a 20-foot boat, it is not required by Ohio law. But is that prudent? You still have to carry a life jacket onboard for every person onboard, and it has to fit that person. Life Jackets for babies are not easy to put on when there is NO emergency -- they are designed to keep their head above water without assistance. How will you manage if there IS an emergency? We recommend that everyone wear their life jacket.

How do I find the manufacturer of my row boat

Dean Carpenter | Sep 19, 2020
Ohio DNR Division of Parks & Watercraft - Boat Registrations | Sep 19, 2020

Your 12-character Hull ID number has all the clues to when your boat was made and who made it -- assuming it was not a homemade boat. This article has all the references you need to figure it out if it was made by a company: https://www.nrs.com/learn/identify-your-boat.asp The Hull ID should be on your boat registration, so if you have access to that, you can consult the list directly from the US Coast Guard: https://uscgboating.org/content/manufacturers-identification.php I hope this helps.

If I have a pond prowler do I need white flotation device

Joan Reese | Sep 20, 2019
Ohio DNR Division of Parks & Watercraft - Boat Registrations | Sep 19, 2021

Safety equipment that is required is usually based on boat size and/or type of propulsion. And just because a piece of safety equipment isn't "required" doesn't mean it isn't prudent to keep on board. Type IV throwable flotation devices are required for powerboats 16 feet and longer. The chart for required safety equipment is found on our website https://ohiodnr.gov/wps/portal/gov/odnr/rules-and-regulations/rules-and-regulations-by-division/state-parks-and-watercraft/boating-rules/required-boating-equipment

Tina McNatt | Sep 20, 2019
Ohio DNR Division of Parks & Watercraft - Boat Registrations | Sep 20, 2019

For boats that require a registration number to be displayed, the number must be 3 inches high, block style lettering, and one color that contrasts the color of the boat. Details can be found in the Ohio Boat Operators Guide, Chapter 1; Registration and Titling Requirements, under Display of Tags and Numbers. http://watercraft.ohiodnr.gov/laws/ohio-boat-operators-guide/ch-1-registration-titling-requirements#r107

Dawn Cox | Sep 20, 2018
Ohio DNR Division of Parks & Watercraft - Boat Registrations | Sep 19, 2020

On http://watercraft.ohiodnr.gov/registrationfaq : How do I register my trailer? Boat Trailers are registered through the BMV like your vehicle -- annually, expiring on your date of birth. If your trailer weighs less than 4,000 lbs., a title is not issued, and thus is not required in order to register the trailer. You will need to take your Ohio driver license or state identification card to your nearest Deputy Registrar location to register. If you do not have an Ohio driver license or identification card, you must provide proof of your social security number. You will also need proof of weight to register. ... Boat numbers, once assigned, stay with a boat for its useful life. You can inform ODNR that the boat is no longer under your ownership so you won't get contacted about renewing the registration. http://watercraft.ohiodnr.gov/Portals/0/forms/watercraft/DNR8455_notice_change_destruction.pdf is the form to use to inform ODNR. You can also apply for a refund on the registration. (http://watercraft.ohiodnr.gov/forms) (http://watercraft.ohiodnr.gov/Portals/0/forms/watercraft/DNR8206_Request_for_refund.pdf)
