Pros: The property is absolutely gorgeous and the gardens were so nice to walk through at the beginning of August. Bed was comfortable and the bathroom was very large in the Dowd Suite. Spacious room. Nice amenities in the bathroom including safe, bathrobes, and more. Staff is very friendly and helpful. Upon checking in, the front desk attendant immediately noticed we’d need a cot and had one sent to our room before we even got there. Great location in an upscale neighborhood. Cons: I understand this is a historical building, but our room was very musty smelling. Interestingly, the hallways, reception, conservatory, and our bathroom smelled fine. It was the room itself that was difficult to be in because of the smell. Carpet is very run down & stained and needs to be replaced. Upholstered furniture also very stained. Patio ended up being a shared patio and other guests on the property in the room next door were using most of the patio furniture so we were unable to enjoy sitting outside our room. Hot water served at breakfast was lukewarm at best. I had to go upstairs to the hallway water dispenser to get hot water for my tea. The upstairs touchless water dispenser was difficult to operate. If you didn’t have your hand/finger JUST SO hovering over the sensor, it kept shutting off. There were three of us in the room but we only had enough towels for two. On the day we arrived, the bellhop ended his shift at 3 pm. Check in isn’t until 3 pm. I’m not sure why the hotel wouldn’t have someone on later for guests checking in. Maybe it was an anomaly? For a hotel of this stature and price, I think there could be more attention to the little details.

One of our favorite date night spots. Awesome little overnight get-a-way for my wife and I.

Not sure what you mean by piece of the forge.... Can you elaborate please
There are no Spa Services at the mansion, however they have fantastic concierge services that may be able to help.
Yes! You can come enjoy the gardens for free without reservations.
Highly doubt they allow pets, but the neighborhood is one of Charlotte's most sought after. Literally across the street (Providence, pretty busy) are several restaurants. My favorite is Stagioni. They've won several awards, and it shows. Possibly the best Italian food in town. Russ makes THE BEST drinks and the manager LeeAnn could not have been any more accommodating. She even remembered us when we came back months later (in a good way).
