Excellent question Chris, most people don't spot that (I didn't and I work here!). It's a mass gave, created when Confederate remains were exhumed from the battlefield 11 years after the fight. There was no way to ID the remains they moved, only what side they'd fought for. The headstones were donated in the 90's and don't mark graves. Despite this, they help memorialize the confederates who died during the battle and are likely buried there (Lt. Simeon Kirby isn't there, we know his body was evacuated during the fight). Page 25 of our Visitors Guide says 8 killed, 44 wounded. It's possible its only counting KIA's or men who died on the days of the battle? We'll look into this & let you know what we find. Thanks again for a great question! Russell Stock Park Interpreter Battle of Rivers Bridge State Historic Site 325 State Park Rd, Ehrhardt SC 29081
