The tour of Samuel Clemen's house was very informative and gave us more insight into his life and writing. The house is well preserved and has much architectural detail that is unique. For example, Tiffany did the wall treatments long before he became known for his work with stained glass. Also, we did not realize that Clemens and Harriet Beecher Stowe were neighbors and influenced each other's views on social justice. Plan to take the Stowe house tour after your visit to the Twain house for a more complete experience. There is a snack bar and bathrooms on the premises so a day trip is easily accomplished. Also, be aware that no photography is allowed in the house itself.

Informative tour of the house about this life, work family and belongings that tension in the house. The guide was a bit dry. It took 1 hour to finish. Not many on your asked questions. Cannot take pics inside the house.

Interesting history and architecture but less than half can be seen (some missing some just closed off). Not really worth the entry fee of over $20 per adult..

No the house is three floors with many stairs. The museum is accessible.
Thank you! 😊
Yes in the house. If you need you need the public restrooms, they are at the ticketing area
I'm sure you could set it up if you wanted exterior shots. There is no photography allowed in the house itself for preservation reasons.
No it was actually 3 different estates in Massachusetts.
There is a small snack bar inside that serves coffee, juice, fruit, etc.
There is no student discount unless you're a Uconn Law or Capital College student.
No, they are very strict about not allowing food or drinks anywhere near the home, but there are many restaurants close by and some snacks in the gift shop if you need something right before or after the tour of the house.
Most of the tours aren't with characters. I didn't go with a character last time though.
Take the tour. From Kit. He's very knowledgeable and enthusiastic.
Outside, yes.
You might get lucky with walk up. Advance online is your best bet.
Hi Sally, you can visit the Mark Twain House by guided tour only. We do offer two types of tours daily. Our House Tour led by one of our trained interpretive guides. While, on our Living History Tour you are led through the house by one of our trained actor/actress playing someone in Sam Clemens' life -- his wife, best friend, maid, butler, etc. We also offer specialty tours through out the year. You can learn more about our daily tours and specialty tours on our website, here: https://marktwainhouse.org/admission
You must book your time through a reservation versus doing it in person. They are very strict with acceptable number reach group to maintain the state's mandated parameters. Also be sure the state you are from is not on the non exempt list or they may turn you away when you arrive.
The house tour is about an hour, and touring the grounds is about the same.
You can walk around the grounds and there is a short film with lots of information . There was also a display room with lots of memorabilia. But I recommend touring the inside of the house it's beautiful
Yes, they have limited tours right now (5 people max when we went)
In the newer museum yes. Not in the original historic home though.
I do believe they do offer free admission to active duty military and their families as they are a blue star museum. But it may be only available Memorial day to Labor day. You can always call them too they really are super nice and welcoming.
The house itself is not handicapped accessible. The museum however is. I would call during business hours to inquire about their policy regarding service animals.
It certainly is a couple of buildings that could engender or accommodate a ghost story
Hi Margot - Thank for the note. Research requests must be made through our curatorial department. Follow this link for more info: https://marktwainhouse.org/collections-research/research-library-archive/
Yes a 40 foot one was parked there when i was there go early however
Around $20 and well worth it.
We got tickets right before, and it was a holiday weekend
You should call the museum directly to verify.
The house was, I believe built with indoor plumbing. The neighborhood had running water when construction started in 1873 and they moved in in 1874 I believe.
Adrian is right. I believe the tour was about an hour to an hour and a half. We took the historical tour in character, which happened to be for all museum members from some convention. That could have elongated ours but it felt like we were moving at the same speed as the tours behind us. However there is a nice display in the modern museum worth looking at before or after your tour, and of course a gift shop.
The bus stop would be Farmington Ave opp Woodland Street. The tours are $20 per person excluding taxes. Check Groupon for deals
