They would dispose of it like regular metal. Depending on your vehicle, you'd be charged the flat rate for residential (check the website for pricing). I'd recommend an "e-cycling" place if you're JUST throwing away tech. There's one not too far away on Western Bypass.

I do not think mattresses are free, and they do not pay for steel or cardboard. You pull up and dump steel at no cost.

You shouldn't have to pay. Just drive through the gate on your left when you enter the facility then ask any of the on site team which container is for recycling and you can proceed with disposal of your cardboard. I recently had to recycle some cardboard and I didn't have to pay.
