A nice hike- almost exclusively level ground, scenic streams/bridges/ponds, and a field to watch swallows swoop around. Well marked trails make it easy to navigate, as well as having several full maps located on the trail. There are several trail options that can increases or decrease your walking time, marked with different colors. *Ticks* Make sure to wear long pants and high socks, as we did find a tick on my son after our hike.

Such a lovely, clean and well maintained place! The last time I was there it had snowed recently so it was very easy to observe animal prints and movement through the preserve. I saw the prints of deer, coyote, fox, and a bobcat. I think if you were to get there early in the day and walked very quietly you could probably spot a lot of these animals, but all it takes is one noisy group to clear animals out of the area. The parking is free, the trails are beautifully marked. No dogs allowed.

An amazing experience! The caretaker was like a long lost brother, as he tenderly guided us away from muddy patches. The paths were well maintained and plentiful. Bluebirds added pops of color and life upon the winter landscape, whilst …

Hi all, thank you for your posts about dogs at Caratunk. The answer is that dogs are not allowed at Caratunk or any Audubon Society of Rhode Island (ASRI) property. The reasoning is that these properties are refuges (i.e. safe places) for wildlife and plants. Dogs (as well as cats) can disturb both the wildlife and hikers. These wildlife refuges are privately owned and maintained by ASRI. Hikers are welcome as long as they stay on the trails and respect the rules that are posted. Thank you for understanding and for supporting Audubon and nature. Jon, Refuge Manager
It was probably stipulated in the conditions of transfer of the property when it was donated... From the RI Audubon web site: "Caratunk was established in 1971 through the generosity of Mr. Charles G. Greenhalgh of Pawtucket, RI."
Hi, great question. The barn (where we conduct programs, parties and camps) is accessible, along with an elevator for access to the second floor. Unfortunately we do not have a formal accessible trail yet. We are interested in the concept, but would need financial assistance as we are a private non-profit organization. Thank you for the question. Jon ( Caratunk Wildlife Refuge Manager)
Suzanne, thanks for the question. YES XC skiing is welcome at Caratunk. We do not sell or rent gear, but we do provide awesome trails! Please look at the alrge map on the kiosk befiore you go. I have marked a particularly steep section that would not be fun on skiis. It is best to stay to the trails on the East side of the refuge. The west side gets a bit tricky. Have fun ! Jon (Refuge Manager)
The refuge opened in 1971.
Nicole, Thank you for your question. Although we love dogs, they (and other pets) are not allowed on Audubon property. Why not you ask? Two reasons: The purpoose of any wildlife refuge is to support the health and safety of the wild animals that live here. And dogs can interfere with that premise. The second reason is to maintain the safety of the people who come here to hike. Thank you for asking and for your understanding. Jon the Refuge Manager
Free to use. There is the voluntary membership fee for Audubon of RI but all preserves are open to the general public regardless of membership.
