Not required but if mail is undeliverable, letter goes nowhere. It would be considered a "dead letter"
I work there. Because of the political season and the political mail everything must go out that day. There are no guarantees when you get your mail but you will get it by end of day very sorry for the inconvenience
If you mean a mailbox key, go in to the post office and show proof of address. It can be your signed agreement from your realtor, or anything of the like as long as it has your name and address on it. They usually take about a week to two weeks to get you a new key for your mailbox.
If I were you I would go to the Post Office and let them know. I'm not sure what they can do but they can probably take a look and see if they can put in a new lock and give you a new key if what you say is true.
