When charging/discharging Lipo batteries, a separate balance lead is used to ensure balanced charging of the cells in the battery. Most Lipo batteries used in RCs require this for charging - EXCEPT the latest Traxxas Lipo IQ batteries which work with Traxxas IQ chargers - in these, the balance lead is built into the connector and not a separate cable.
