I used to work for NYC Department of Homeless Services (DHS) from *2006-2010.  I was assigned to "Barbara S. Kleiman" (BSK) men's only shelter with title of Caseworker.  It houses 200 men and is a "program" shelter, meaning it caters to persons with different and specific needs (not all shelters do this; most shelters house people until adequate housing is found with no other services catered to their clients/residents). As an employee of BSK, I found it to be a quiet and an inproblematic temporary housing facility - I had worked at the "Bellvue"  homeless shelter for a very short time of 6 months and heard about my clients' not so great experiences in other shelters (not necessarily DHS shelters). I found BSK to be a quiet and not an overfilled temporary housing facility.  A facility-wide intercom system allows for shelter staff to make shelter-wide or resident-specific announcements.  Security is not armed.  A 'metal detector' must be utilized by anyone who enters the facility, be it employee or resident. It has a huge reck. room with a big TV screen and  a ping-pong table.  Lots of board games are also available. The cafeteria is sizeable.  Laundry apparatuses in a form of cleaners & dryers are also available at BSK.  BSK sits on huge grounds.  The "L" train subway entrance is within a short walking distance from the shelter. *Due to the fact that I have not visited the "Barbara S. Kleiman" (BSK) temporary housing facility/men's shelter in 12 years -- since 2010 -- my above-described amenities may have changed.  The capacity of 200 men may also have changed. In short, this review is based on what I experienced at the "Barbara S. Kleiman"  men's shelter as an employee in 2010.

The staff are nasty to residence and unprofessional when the food is served it’s often uncooked and given out in small portions for grown men that often stay without food hours at a time. A body was found dead on the day of Friday the 4/10/20 of COVID-19 and a family member of mine was in the same unit and Was put out in the hallway. however At times when I would call my next of kin I would hear someone coughing, today they found that man dead and the shelter is waiting for the corinor to pick up the body my kin suffers from type 2 diabetes and is at risk of contracting the virus the city and Mr Hall will be held responsible if anything happens to my next of kin because of the lack of procedures and protocols they are not following this will be delt with and the rooms need to be disinfected properly moving forward is paper trail if anything happens to my next of kin Mr Hall.....

I do wish I can give them a lower grade for Star Rank, Even half a star or maybe a quarter of a star! Some of the staff are great. (Like 20%) The rest are Extremely, Extremely Horrible. They treat everyone horribly, from the veterans to the civilians. Very disrespectful and super disgusting! Mouse running around in the cafeteria while people are eating. Security guard treating you as prisoners! It is certainly an outrageous place! If you are not able to hold your own and do what you have to do on your own, I wouldn’t recommend this place to anyone looking for help. Immediately get a transfer as soon as your placed here! These people will withhold information from you unless you do your own research! You have to be a veteran to get some type of help!
