I have been using RHTC for five years since I suffer from Sudden Sensoneural hearing loss with associated tinnitus. Since my chemotherapy regime, I noticed my hearing worsened in the affected ear and went in to see what could be done. I use a Starkey hearing aid for the affected ear, and based on the new testing, Dr. Baker was able to adjust the Starkey so that I can hear much better in that ear. They know what they're doing there and answered all my questions about nerve damage and cochlear implants very comprehensively.

Cochlear implants work in a completely different way than hearing aids! Instead of making sounds louder, they use electrical signals to stimulate your hearing nerve. Things may sound different at first, but as your brain learns to understand what it's hearing, you can understand much better than with hearing aids!
Cochlear implants are often a next solution for our patients, when their hearing aids are not providing enough assistance. Many people start by wearing two hearing aids. However, as hearing loss progresses, you may need something more. To improve your hearing performance and help you understand more clearly, you may need to consider a solution that helps you hear your best with both ears. For many, a cochlear implant in one ear and a hearing aid in the other can provide a richer more natural hearing experience. This combination is referred to as bimodal hearing. At Raleigh Hearing and Tinnitus Center, we conduct candidacy evaluations to determine if an implant might be right for you. We also support recipients of cochlear implants by meeting their needs for initial activation, interim programming, troubleshooting, upgrades, and even equipment orientation.
The evaluation, including time for discussion with the audiologist to review test results and asking questions, will last about 60 minutes in length. If the results indicate you need hearing aids, allow for sufficient time to discuss your options. It is recommended that you bring a family member with you to the evaluation appointment. Most audiologists agree that hearing loss is a family issue. It helps to have another supportive person at the appointment to help you understand the information and recommendations. Before your appointment, a complete medical history will be completed and the audiologist will want to hear about any complaints you have about your hearing. They will pay special attention to any concerns you have about exposure to noise, tinnitus, and balance problems. Make sure that you take a full list of any medications and supplements you are taking with you to your appointment.
All of our audiologists hold a Tinnitus Management Certificate from the American Board of Audiology. We offer many options in tinnitus management including tinnitus retraining therapy, tinnitus activities treatment, and hearing aids, just to name a few. Please call us at (919) 790- 8889 to schedule an appointment and we can go over all the options.
