I had questions about a recent new appraisal of my property and tax bills associated with reappraisal. They were very polite and explained everything clearly. They also notified me of an open permit on file that I did not know about. I am very happy I spoke with them in person.

The clerk was very helpful and kind. She knew what she was doing and was very helpful. She made it very easy and we just glided through it all. I would suggest to others Veterans to do the required work of filling out the paperwork because it is so worth the savings one gets on taxes, unbelievable! I would do it again. It was such an easy process thanks to the Clerk that helped me. Yes!

How can I get a written estimate of the value of my home in April 2017, when my husband passed away.

Barbara Hadley-Crow | Jan 15, 2022
Sacramento County Assessor | Jan 15, 2022

The assessed value that your property taxes are based on does not always reflect the market value of that property for any given year. To obtain the value of your home, you will need to seek out a real estate broker who can give you a value estimate or a certified fee appraiser who can give you a formal appraisal of your property. Please be aware that the purpose of the written estimate often determines the type of estimate or appraisal needed. Please contact your legal or estate professional to find out what you will need. To ensure that a fee appraiser is licensed to appraise in California, go to: https://brea.ca.gov To ask questions regarding your assessed value, please call our office at 916-875-0700.

Please carefully read the instructions and the form titled, "Claim of Person(s) at Least 55 Years of Age for Transfer of Base Year Value to Replacement Dwelling (BOE-60-AH)," certain qualifications MUST BE MET TO QUALIFY for this transfer. This form is located on our website under forms or simply Google the form name. Please call us at (916) 875-0700 if you have any questions.

does prop 13 transfer from lake county to sacramento county?

Rick Melville | Sep 13, 2019
Sacramento County Assessor | Sep 12, 2020

Sacramento County does not have an ordinance to allow a base year value transfer from outside the county (Prop 90). According to the CA Board of Equalization, there are 10 counties that do have an ordinance. To find out which counties do have it go to: https://www.boe.ca.gov/proptaxes/prop60-90_55over.htm

I am recently married and found out my husband is paying a property tax a lot more than next house which is bigger and better than his house. What should we do to reduce property tax? Does local tax assessor have power to reduce tax? Or Attorney?

Kimberly Tanaka | Sep 13, 2019
Sacramento County Assessor | Sep 12, 2020

CA Law (Prop 13) requires base values to be set at market value only when there is a change in ownership or new construction. Since market conditions continually fluctuate, it is possible to have substantially different assessed values in the same neighborhood. The question is: is the assessed value on your bill higher than the market value of your property? If so, you may qualify for a temporary reduction (Prop 8). Request an informal value review on our website after 7/2/20, when the review period opens.
