Nice area to hike and camp. I went on a 9 mile loop starting and ending at the Newtown Reservoir. I stopped by each of the two shelters available for camping by permit. Both offer water views and are in good condition. Only the Buckman Brook shelter looked like it had enough room for additional tents. The Duck Pond shelter looked better suited for additional hammock camping. Both had privies. My hike also took me up and over Round Top hill via the Round Top trail. There is a limited view to the east from the top thanks to some observation platforms. Most of the trails are actually ATV or Jeep type roads. So it's pretty easy going for hiking.

I don't believe so. I access it from Athol. The road is across from Athol Hospital. Keep going up and follow signs.
I want to say that the sites are open year round. From what I read there free no charge and you need to get permission from the Athol conservation Commission. Max stay 2 weeks per person. Being free a donation is in order, but not required. Mr. P. Says, happy camping. 😁😎😎😎 .
You have to get ahold of either miller's river woods or the Tully commission
