The Food Bin

The Food Bin was my favorite grocery shopping place the year I lived in Santa Cruz. I was there shopping when the earthquake struck in sept 1989. At first I thought it was an earthpoundermachine. When I realized it was. a quake it was too late to escape. Fortunately the building did not collapse. I had contemplated visiting the coffee shop that collapsed and killed people. I could have been one of them. I climbed over the piles of goods, that had fallen off the shelves and was at first a bit disappointed that no one would checkout my purchases, so I had to leave them ;-) I am so happy to see that The Food Bin is still there and still holding on to its high eco standards. I loved the sign by the road, which carried comments to the times. After the quake it just said "WOW"

I've been here a few times over the yeaes, but I am not really a big health food person so it's not somewhere I go out of my way for, but I went today and I realized how good the quality of the food is, and they actually do have foods that I like, and they do carry some name brand items that I like too. It is definitely very expensive but I would prefer to shop local when I can. Good job food bin!

I just found this place today. Amazing funky little store with a good selection of food and produce at reasonable prices. If I lived in Santa Cruz I would shop here regularly not just for the food but to feel more connected to the community.

Lived here for two years now and stopped in for the first time today. I didn’t want the hassle of dealing with Safeway for just a few items. I got some super fresh and yummy produce. Decently priced. They have a ton of items in such a small store I was blown away! I will be back for sure. Bonus: they carry healthy dog treats!
