Sam was dispatched to our house to replace three locks, to include the front door, exterior garage door, and interior garage door. I also requested kick plates me installed on the exterior two doors. I walked through each door with Sam and explained the exact work we wanted done. It seemed like we were on the same page, apparently not. The work done the first time around was terrible. Unfortunately I was not home when the work was done so I didn't have a chance to see it until well after Sam had left. I have attached photos of the amateurish job Sam did at our house. We were quoted for $1100 for the job but the work done was worth nothing. I now need our door frame piece re-done and the cracked door where the deadbolt installed probably needs to be replaced. Sam acted as though he was doing us a favor by coming back to fix the terrible work he did the first time around. Our quote was to fortify two exterior doors as well as the new locks. Sam installed what looked like a piece of scrap on the rear side door. The metal piece looked scratched, damaged and battered. It had been colored in with a sharpie pen to conceal the damage. The interior lock didn't even have all of the hardware changed and Sam left a silver piece to go along with all the black pieces we ordered. Who does this type of work? Sam then had the nerve to tell me he should charge me more because now this was more work. Sam started to try and fix the work but removed so much wood from the door frame that he then complained there was a big gap and he didn't know what to do. More work because he didn't do it correctly the first time. I asked Sam to leave and that I would request a different locksmith from the company. Sam cussed at me and stormed off, flipping me off on his way out. I have video of this all as we have exterior cameras with audio recording. I have attempted to contact a Manager or someone in charge all day and have received no calls. I would NEVER use this company. I am going to have to dispute my credit card charges and then try to recoup the cost of the repairs. Really fun.

Questions & Answers

How to fix a door lock that is jammed?

Syed Farhan | Sep 8, 2019
Locksmith On Wheels | Sep 8, 2019

There are many reasons why a door lock would get jammed and there is not one way to fix it. In some cases there is no fix and the lock simply needs to be changed while in other times it could be a quick lock repair or adjustment. A professional locksmith would be able to identify the problem within minutes as well as offer a solution. Most residential locksmiths see these kind of problems on a daily basis and are well trained to fix these issues on the field.

Do you sell digital locks for homes?

Syed Farhan | Sep 8, 2019
Locksmith On Wheels | Sep 8, 2019

Yes, we sell digital locks! Digital locks also known as smart locks or keypad locks are on the rise and are becoming more and more popular. There are plenty of great options to choose from that offer different features, security levels, finishes and integrations. If you're looking for a smart lock for your home it is best to reach out to a local locksmith that offers residential locksmith services. In many cases a smart lock can be installed in place of an existing deadbolt and in order times some modifications to your door would be required. My keys are marked with "Do not duplicate". Can I make a copy of it?

Syed Farhan | Sep 8, 2019
Locksmith On Wheels | Sep 8, 2019

There is a debate on the question on whether or not "Do not Duplicate" keys have any meaning in terms of legally making copies. The bottom line is that any professional local locksmith can make a copy of these and that the stamp carries no legal standing, in other words you can still duplicate these keys as long as the locksmith you go to doesn't mind. The only time key duplication is prohibited is when the key itself is restricted. In these cases most locksmiths will not even attempt to make a duplicate without authorization and in many cases they won't be able to do so since the blanks are exclusive to specific locksmiths.

What is the most secure lock for my home?

Syed Farhan | Sep 8, 2019
Locksmith On Wheels | Sep 8, 2019

The most secure locks for your home are usually deadbolts and these are preferred to be high security or grade 1 quality locks. These locks cannot be found at your local hardware store and it's best to reach out to a reliable local locksmith that carries different types of locks and offers this type of locksmith service. High security locks come with keys and cylinders that are extremely difficult to manipulate and tamper with. The keys cannot be duplicated unless authorized which means that you have control over any key duplication. Grade 1 locks are superior in their materials and are usually solid brass; making it very difficult to break using brute force. There are plenty of ways to enhance the security of your home front door. For starters you would need to make sure you have a solid door otherwise any enhancement would not really have any affect. In order to determine which security upgrades are best for you, reach out to a licensed locksmith near you that deals with front door locks for homes and adding extra layers of security. Should I change my traditional residential lock to smart lock?

Syed Farhan | Sep 8, 2019
Locksmith On Wheels | Sep 8, 2019

Smart locks are the taking over and more and more home owners and businesses alike are making the switch. The idea of not having to worry about keys is a game changer. No keys means you cannot lose them. It also means you are less likely to get locked out. Your local locksmith would be able to suggest the best smart lock for your door while maintaining the look and style you're interested in. You don't need to change all your locks to smart locks. We recommend replacing just one if you're on a tight budget; and that would be the for the door you use most frequently.

Why my lock is not opening smoothly?

Syed Farhan | Sep 8, 2019
Locksmith On Wheels | Sep 8, 2019

There could be a number of reasons why your lock is not working smoothly as it should. This could be due to a malfunction or broken part or simply an adjustment or realignment of the lock and strike plate on the frame. It may also be a bad or worn key that simply doesn't turn smoothly. In these cases it is best to contact your local locksmith to determine the cause. We do not recommend disassembling a lock that is causing problems as there is a good chance you won't be able to put it back together. A professional residential locksmith would figure out the culprit right away as this is a basic locksmith service in most cases.

Can I have a single key to all my locks? Is it wise to do so?

Syed Farhan | Sep 8, 2019
Locksmith On Wheels | Sep 8, 2019

Technically it is possible to have all locks work on the same key as long as all your locks can accept the same key. In order to figure this out you simply need to see if the key you want working on all locks fits in all of them, it doesn't have to turn. So long as it fits, it is most likely possible to match. If you're uncertain, you should contact your local locksmith to evaluate for you. Rekeying locks to the same key is beneficial if you're looking to carry less keys; which is very convenient for the most part. Most professional residential locksmiths provide rekeying as a basic service and would be able to perform this task for you with no issues at all.

I am renting an apartment, should I rekey it?

Syed Farhan | Sep 8, 2019
Locksmith On Wheels | Sep 8, 2019

If you are renting rather than a homeowner, rekeying is typically not permitted without written consent from your landlord. With that said, you should also request that your landlord rekeys your locks before you move in which is common. Most landlords work with a local locksmith that they contact anytime a tenant moves out of their property. They have a residential locksmith that provides rekeying for home locks that would provide them with a few copies of the new key and make sure that all locks are in good working condition before the new tenants move in. This includes all access to the property including garage door and even the mailbox lock.

Is rekeying necessary for newly purchased home?

Syed Farhan | Sep 8, 2019
Locksmith On Wheels | Sep 8, 2019

Almost all new homeowners contact their local locksmith to get their locks either changed or rekeyed. In most cases an appointment is scheduled as early as the day of the closing to avoid any chance of older keys working the locks before the ink even dries. Whether or not you should rekey or replace your locks is dependent on whether the current locks you have are of good quality for the most part. There is no point in rekeying a cheap insecure lock as the cost of rekeying may exceed the value of the lock itself and you would still not benefit in any form of security. In this case it is best to contact your local locksmith and ask them for their professional opinion. An honest locksmith will not change your lock unless it really is beneficial in comparison to your current lock. A residential locksmith will know when its best to rekey our home lock and when its better to upgrade to a new one.

How much does it cost to have a deadbolt lock installed?

Syed Farhan | Sep 8, 2019
Locksmith On Wheels | Sep 8, 2019

Installing a new deadbolt lock can improve your home security, especially if you think your current lock system has been compromised or there are unaccounted-for copies of your house keys in circulation. A professional locksmith can install a new deadbolt for you in a matter of hours. The national average locksmith price ranges from $70 to $100. Locksmith prices for installing deadbolts may be higher based on whether the professional provides the lock or you have it on hand, how many components the locking system includes, and how long the installation takes. The cost to purchase a lock yourself from a big-box store can range from approximately $70 to $225 or more, depending on quality and materials. Higher-security locks often take longer and therefore cost more to install.
