It's a dirt road, but I easily made it in my 2 wheel drive sedan. Parking was filling up quickly by 9 am on a Saturday. I'd recommend getting there early! The hike to Mason lake was awesome. Note that a good portion of the hike is in the sun.

July 9 2022 . Well parking is a mess. Somehow I reached the parking lot around 11.30 am considering the way people had parked their cars on both sides of road. I found a spot after waiting about 20 mins as I saw many cars come and go back. The road to lot was not too bad onlya few big potholes on the gravel road. The trail requires NW forest pass..you can pay using the qr code posted and follow instructions.there is no pay tube. . The hike begins with gentle incline but at around 1.6 miles becomes pretty steep for a while. Then there are lon g sections of switch backs which u manage to overcome and the u reach a place where u see big rock sections and people up top. U may feel like giving up here but u can do it..its not as difficult as it Initially looks. Once at top u have a steep decline and some hike till u reach the lake. We relaxed on a Boulder at the lake for a bit ...it was wonderful hike. See the pictures if u don't believe Me. I only saw 2 or 3 kids on the trail but my 10 yo did it fine..he got recharged after we let him dip his legs in the cold water. This is atleast a moderate hike considering the elevation. The toughest part though may be parking.

Moderate to hard hike for people who are not avid hikers. It was muddy, rocky and there was snow during last 5% of the trail. Hiking boots are recommended. We went on a foggy day so unfortunately not the best views. The Mason lake was frozen. There is a $5 charge for parking (if you don’t have Northwest forest pass) can’t buy with cash so recommended to get online; write confirmation number and put it on windshield. (Don’t be like us and get a pen paper to write it down :P)

This trail isn’t too long but quite strenuous because of the elevation gain so be prepared. In late June this year the top of the trail was still covered with snow and spikes were not required but I would recommend! The views are awesome though and overall we really enjoyed this trail :)

If I bought the pass last night am I able to just show proof and I will be okay with parking for this hike?

I did that and got away with it but I don't know what their formal policy is... Make sure they can see the date of purchase, maybe check faq?
