I lived in Charlotte for decades and raised my kids there, so I have a lot of experience with excellent, big-city libraries. (If you haven't visited ImaginOn, the children's library in downtown Charlotte, you MUST! Coolest library I've ever seen!) I've been amazed by the selection and the service provided by the libraries I've visited in Brunswick County, especially the Southport Branch. Staff members are friendly and helpful, and they know their patrons. It's always a happy moment walking in there. Someone on here complained about people TALKING in the library. Seriously? I love walking in and hearing an enthusiastic discussion of a book, or kids having fun in the children's room, or a conversation between a visitor and a staff member. Gone are the no-voice-above-a-whisper days in a public library, and thank goodness for that! People go there to gather information, to exchange thoughts with others who share their taste in or are adventurous about their literature, and to pass along their joy of reading to their children. Sometimes these activities are a bit noisy. Yay! :D While it's fun to check out the different "personalities" of regional branches, their website saves so much time. Can't remember a title or an author? Find anything you need by searching with subject key words. Although each branch might be smallish, the system's selection is excellent. On the site you can find anything you want, put it on hold, and within a couple of days, they'll bring it to the branch most convenient to you. Oak Island and Leland (and possibly others) have handy Saturday hours, too. It's not just about books, either. Why rent from Redbox or subscribe to Netflix? Find what you want to watch online and check it out from the library! We watched the first 7 seasons of Game of Thrones for free on DVD, and we had the added bonus of special features not shown on HBO. I check out so many DVDs, they asked if I had suggestions earlier this year when it was time to order new ones. Now that's personalized service! ;) I love everything about the Southport Library! Well, except maybe the sparse parking on busy summer days. But it's around the corner from plenty of spaces, and it's always nice to walk in beautiful, historic downtown Southport. After picking up your books, you can take a short stroll to the waterfront and enjoy reading in a swing for a while. What more could anyone ask? Hmmm... maybe a Trolly Stop root beer float for refreshment while you read?

We LOVE this library and their staff! They are helpful and kind. Especially Mrs. Emily she always gives my kids stickers and is quick to help like all the staff there. We've been coming here since my kids were little, now they can finally see over the counter! They have plenty of fun activities for kids, summer reading program, lego club to name a few!
