We went to see a ferret because we wanted to adopt her. She's adorable... but appears old. I asked for the full info packet... it took over 90 minutes for them to get to us. They claimed they were busy, but all I saw was them bringing vet checked cats from downstairs up to the cages. I know it needs to get done but youd think an adoption cou seling would take precedence. We were then told the info, which is absolutely nothing. Everything they knew about her had been shared and waiting for the profile was an absolute waste of time. I tell them I know she's a marshalls ferret-- they all have tattoos in their ears. I inform thrm that their adoption fee states it covers a spay, but Marshall's spays all their ferrets before they are sold. Why would we pay the $100 fee to the humane society for the spaying of the animal when they didn't do it. I was fine with an adoption fee, but not ok with them charging for a procedure they didn't perform. I asked them about doing ferret playdates to make sure my boys liked her before we adopted. They said yes, but when they asked their manager she said no.... they only offer that service for dogs. I asked what options I had and they said I could adopt for $100, bring her home and see if it works. I said, but what if it doesn't, will a refund be given? They told me no refunds ever. So at this point they want to charge for a surgery they didn't do, wasted over an hour of my time, and won't allow us to trial our ferrets to see if they get along. It felt very business like instead of for the animals. I told them I needed time to discuss it with my husband and they guilted me! They said "oh someone is waiting to adopt that ferret right now and if you don't take her she won't be available tomorrow". I left because of the way I was treated and that they aren't pro animal, they are pro money.

As someone who worked in other Vermont Humane societies I have to say this one is the worst. (Obviously saving animals is amazing) But they make the adoption process really difficult and charge more than most places. They'll keep you on a wait list for years and never call you when the pet you want is available, so you really have to keep visiting, otherwise you likely won't find a pet. They also make it really difficult to bring in rescued pets. I found a kitten a while back and they said they were ready but it ended up taking 3 hours and I had to fill out paperwork which made me feel guilty for even trying to save the kitten I found. It was so uncomfortable that the next time I found kittens I drove to a different Humane society for help. One pro is that they were really nice to me about fostering. It was something I wanted to try during the pandemic and the process was really smooth. And when unfortunately I couldn't follow through they were quick about taking the animal back and finding a new foster, without judgement. That seems like a really great opportunity for people with appropriate time and space. 🐶🐱

Nice staff. Good environment for doing volunteer work (from experience). Plenty of cats and dogs when I was there. All seemed well for the animals.

They have a program where you need to follow specific guidelines. All info you desire should be available here: https://www.hsccvt.org/Volunteer
All depends on the animals Could take 2 to 4 weeks when i surrender mine it took 3 weeks
These questions don't go to the management. Just local people. That said, i know that they do take donations of blankets. Not sure about the pillows.
Hi Elaine! HSCC does not currently adopt out birds. You can check out our website to see all the animals we have available for adoption at www.hsccvt.org/adopt !
HSCC has a free pet food shelf for families in need. We restock the pet food shelf as often as we can, and frequently have essentials like cat food and litter available. Feel free to stop by any time day or night to check it out! And when we do a big restock, we usually post it on our Instagram stories (@hsccvt), so you can keep an eye out there as well.
Sierra, There are dogs available for adoption. There are also volunteer openings which would allow a person to help the dogs in many ways. From walking dogs to cleaning their enclosures. But no, if you want to just go to play with a group of puppies, that's not something the shelter offers.
They have a bench outside which is protected from weather. I put something on it last week.
Yes there are dogs, cats and other small animals
Hi Kyle! HSCC's free pet food shelf is available each weekday from 9 AM - 5PM. The actual items change depending on donations, but there's almost always some cat food available. You're welcome to swing by during those hours and take what you need!
According to their website, 16. But, to work directly with the dogs, 18. https://www.hsccvt.org/Volunteer
They are closed on Sundays and Mondays, as well as major holidays (4th of July, Christmas, etc)
Please call HSCC. Volunteers answer these questions. But if you call HSCC, they'll have resources for you.
They have a rabies vaccination clinic once a year. And can suggest places to get low cost spays and neuters. But HSCC does not offer veterinary services in general.
Hi Joan. We are sorry to hear about your circumstances and understand your need for assistance. Please call us at 802-862-0135 to speak with us about how we may be able to help you take these cats in.
Hello Amy! Thanks so much for asking! You can donate by calling us at 802-862-0135 during business hours or you can donate online at https://www.chittendenhumane.org/Donate. Have a great day!
They do not offer veterinary services. They can make recommendations about where to get low cost spay/neuter done.
Definitely never seen reptiles, but can confirm rabbits and guinea pigs.
Hi Theresa, So sorry to hear about your grandson's dog. Unfortunately, there aren't any low cost vet care resources in this area. We always recommend reaching out to friends, neighbors, relatives, and post online/social media and ask people to help you take your dog to the vet. You can also call around to see what different vet offices charge for a visit. Lastly, you can consider applying for a Care Credit card, which is a credit card that can be used at most vets. If there is no other option and you are unable to get your dog to the vet for medical care, you can always call us to talk about surrendering ownership to us, if you live in Chittenden or Grand Isle county. This is often the last resort for folks who want to keep their pet, but it is an option worth considering if you need to. You would need to call us at 802-862-0135 to speak with someone about scheduling an intake appointment.
These questions don't go to the management of the organization. They get answered by the general public who happen to know a bit about the organization. That said, HSCC does make efforts to support low income families. To help them keep their pets since they see pets as family. To that end, they have pet food which they donate to families in need and know of veterinary resources for low income families.
Hi Nancy - Please call us during business hours at 802-862-0135 and we can go over our intake process with you!
I volunteer at the shelter and yes we could use them.
Note:These questions don't go to the employees directly. They're answered by the general public. That said, I volunteer there and was just there. They have some young cats but not what you'd call kittens. The best way to see what they have available is to check their website daily. They get new critters in all the time and kittens get adopted very quickly.
Yes, they do.
Tuesday - Friday 1:00 - 6:00. Saturday 10:00 AM - 4:00 PM. Also, many functions are held at the shelter outside of adoption hours. That may be why you saw cars but the doors were locked. Training classes, etc. Also, volunteers are also going to be parked there while they are inside cleaning cages, etc.
They do some clinics throughout the year. The rabies clinic is generally in the spring.
Often. They go quickly though.
