Slab city is a unique but also kind of off-putting area, lots of drugs to make a place like this function. I'd say some are just burn out hippies on LSD but there are others probably on meth out there too. Worth visiting to see because there are a good amount of interesting art projects, I would just not go without someone ee with you and maybe even bring a weapon to defend yourself. That's the vibe I get. Again go see Salvation mountain and stop by East Jesus but be smart and stay safe.

Billed as the only art museum in Imperial County, that may be true, so if you like folk art (at least I think that is what it is called) this would probably be a worthwhile experience. It is unique for sure. I liked it, however much of it is to the extreme. It is all made from other people's trash basically. Some of it is very clever and unique and some of it is tired and worn out and needs a refresh.

I passed through this campground before heading back into California and it’s artistic and welcoming. A lot of cool information to learn if you talk to the locals. I’d highly suggest going during the day before sundown.

Questions & Answers

What is the road like to get there? Wanting to stop by for an hour or so on our road trip, it we are in a truck towing a small trailer. Doable?

30ft rv was not a problem. Road is not good but not extremely bad either. You may park next to it as the entrance is narrow and they do not like larger vehicles as space for parking is limited. 50m away enough space.

It is not a good idea if you are covid compliant to either bring covid to East Jesus or otherwise you'll find yourself in a very uncompliant area with people that have a very high infection rate. It's also in Slab City which has its own set of problems that include people that front upon outside visitors and confront them on vacation.

Is East Jesus dog friendly?

Ira Sanchez | Sep 4, 2019

East Jesus itself is dog friendly and requires you to put your dog on a leash. East Jesus exists in an off grid community where the norm is to let dogs and cats roam free. East Jesus' neighbor rescues cats. There is a cat at East Jesus, Lil Baby Jesus, so if your dog is a chaser, keep that in mind.

Is there a west Jesus?

West Satan is the camp next to it. Jack Twohorses sells stickers and makes art. One visitor who stayed last season says he's the best artist in Slabs, including East Jesus. Worth a visit. He rescues cats too. So if you see one, it's probably his. Update 2021: West Satan has moved to the corner of the street that leads to East Jesus. Still next to it, just other side.
