It's the perfect fish and seafood restaurant. That's all they serve and they do it well. I mean over the top and amazing not just well... The oyster appetizer is so good we ordered a second helping.. monkfish is delish. Menu is written on a chalkboard daily to highlight the freshest catches. If you don't want fish or seafood this is not the place for you. We saw a few people leave as they wanted some other choice. We didn't get it. The name sums it up. Do one thing and do it well. Enjoy a great meal. The staff is friendly and attentive.

First visit to Newport from Hartford area. We ran into a nice women who recommended Scales & Shells when we stopped for lunch in Putnam. She said it is her favorite restaurant in the world (and it sounded like she had done a lot of traveling). So we had to try it. Absolutely the right decision! The food was fantastic! I had the swordfish special of the evening and my wife ,who doesn’t care for seafood, had the pasta primavera. Both dishes were excellent! The waiter was a young man but very knowledgeable about the menu and his service was top rate. I highly recommend Scales & Shells!

We got in early at Scales. Exactly at 5pm and we were the first customer in. 30 minutes later the restaurant started to fill up the tables with guests. And before i know it the restaurant was packed and with guest waiting outside. We ordered the lobster fra diavola for 2 at $65 which 4 people can eat this and Omg this dish is the most delicious. The sauce has a hint of spicy in it which escalates all your taste buds having you wanting more. Now i know why this place get packed so fast.

I completely forgot to take a picture before I ate, I was a bit hungry. I had the black sea bass, which was extra smokey and bland. The relish in the side was delicious and gave the fish some flavor along with the lemon wedge on my plate. The Sangria was decent. I swear Americans need a lesson from Spain. Spain has the best Sangria I've ever had. This restaurant doesn't take reservations which is much needed. My friend and I went to several that needed a reservation and had a 1-2 hrs wait. The wait was 45 min, still long but we were able to eat the swordfish fingers at the bar which was delicious. No pictures for that either. 🥲
