I strongly recommend going elsewhere to adopt animals. From our first visit, the staff was condescending and rude. We persevered in attempting to adopt a bunny, but we were notified that our application was going to be rejected because our dog was not yet neutered. Our dog unfortunately is not yet a year old - too young to be neutered. When I asked why there is no exception to the policy for animals that are too young, they were not able to provide an answer. When I got upset on the phone (not yelling or being rude, but expressing frustration at the seeming nonsensical nature of the policy and asking that there be a review process), apparently that worker did not go to a manager for a discussion and instead put a note in my file saying not to allow us to adopt the rabbit. To say that my children are devastated is an understatement - they went and met the animal and were so excited. The entire process was grossly mismanaged from the outset, which really is tragic because all wr were trying to do was provide a loving home to the little bun. I've since found out that the staff member who treated us that was has left. So there isn't even a way to review the application. I ended up crying on the phone to these people. Just absolutely absurd that trying to adopt would turn unto such a circus. These folks need to SERIOUSLY rethink their training and processes. I can clearly see from the reviews that I am not the only one to have had this experience. It's almost feels like they don't want you to adopt their animals.

Got my sweet boy from here 3 months ago. It was a great experience. The facility is well cared for and the staff was very nice. Michael was great in all of our communications and setting up our meeting with our new pup. Adding a picture of our slightly crazy but incredibly loving rescue dog. He makes us laugh every day and is never without his ball!

Fairfax Co. did us the favor of housing our rotten rescue mutt back in February of 2017... Charlie needed an interim shelter between his first family and us being ready for him to pick us. They are professional, they run a clean shelter, and we're so grateful for the work they do. Mind you, Charlie has no desire to go back, but that is no reflection on the care he received there. If his first people are ever curious, he got to the right place and we're glad you gave us the chance to love him. Also, totally understand why he might not have been the right doggo for your situation.

How do I volunteer to help?

james kelley | Sep 3, 2019
C Oberle | Sep 3, 2019

There is a volunteer section on their website that explains what to do. I currently walk and spend time with the dogs that are up for adoption. It is so rewarding and the dogs deserve all the attention they can get. More volunteers are needed so all the dogs get lots of love and exercise!

I refer people to waggle dot org. It's crowdfunding but pays directly to a vet for animal care for those who otherwise can't afford it. I am not affiliated with the Humane Society but have found waggle useful in the past...

Thank you for your interest in volunteering with us. To be able to volunteer at the admin building where our cats and small mammals are kept and the farm where our dogs and horses are, you must be 18 or older. If you are under 18 and still want to do something to help our animals, we do have a list of things that volunteers can do without being on premises. Please call us @ 703-385-7387 and we can email you that list. Thank you again!

I have a cat that I must leave behind for a move. If I donate $500 to the society, can they take this cat and find her a new home? Tom, in Reston

Tom Wiltshire | Sep 3, 2019
HSFC Administrative Office | Sep 3, 2019

Please give us a call to see if there is space available for your cat. We will ask that you fill out a questionnaire about your animal. If we have space available that helps us determine where in our facility your pet would best fit. We also will give you a list of other local rescues in the event that we are at capacity. Thank you and best of luck.
