When you haven't paid your gas bill for awhile, this is where you go to pay to avoid a shutoff. Very nice people behind bullet-proof glass - bank style. Makes me wonder, just how crazy does it get in this office? Attempted to pay with my Visa card, but no credit cards, sorry! (Is this a PUC regulation?) In order to pay by credit card, you learn that you never had to come here in the first place - and that the desultory phone on the desk in the lobby is your lifeline to hot water and cooking fuel. Making friends with the telephone, you are treated to an eye-squinting experience of punching a sequence of 36 digits for the benefit of a private equity funded robot that will not tolerate any errors or delays. 36 = your SoCal Gas account number (10) + the amount you are paying (4) + credit card number with expiration date (24 total). One slip up and it's take two. If you commit an error or delay, you must enter the 36 digit sequence again. You have three tries to cross this lake of fire or the robot will hang up on you. Sorry - you are incompatible. During your ordeal, the human beings behind the bullet-proof glass will be watching you from across the lobby - empathizing, hopeful, but unable to assist in any way. While the moral support is encouraging, I still don't understand the arcane regulations that cause the Gas Company to refuse credit card payments, except through a private contractor and $1.50 service charge. I left the office satisfied to know that my water won't go cold tomorrow, and that I have another month to settle up the rest of my bill. I'm relieved that real people work here and they are very nice. I'm very disappointed in the financial engineering which seems to be inhumane and not built for public convenience or forbearance.
