Weary librarians that appear all-smiles to a select few including children and the elderly but boy do they cast a judgmental eye on the rest of us. I’m sure that some of their downtown guests need a little extra attention as some folks apparently have arrived with all of their worldly belongings and stay from open til close. A colorful cast of characters. I’ve had so many crazy looks from the staff that it’s dehumanizing. Seriously. I know it’s a library and I’m respectful, quiet and clean. But it’s also just a library. This heavy Us against Them vibe is just bizarre. Besides that weirdness though the place is super chill. Free access to computers, free copier/ printer pages -up to 30 each day- bathrooms, awesome periodical selection, a huge genealogy department that’s even staffed on certain days and an entire floor for kids and young adults upstairs and away from all of us adults. The location downtown is near two parking lots- one pay and one free. It’s part of the City Hall Campus so while you’re there be sure to step across the street and check City Hall out. It’s a great Spanish colonial rancho style building with absolutely amazing landscaping and rose garden. The library closes at 6 M-F and 5 on S&S. Grab a book. Reading is better than any thing you’ll see on Netflix YouTube or Tik Tok.

Santa Cruz is a beautiful town. It is located on the ocean where you can enjoy different ocean views, fresh air, surfing and more... People in Santa Cruz are lovely and friendly. There are many suitable motels where you can stay to relax and also restaurants that serve healthy organic food. I experienced a wonderful life in Santa Cruz

Libraries are amazing places full of wonder! The Santa Cruz public libraries are some of the best in the world. You can find almost any book, and if its not available you can request it and it'll be brought to your closest branch. There are many resources available, from computers to laptops, etc. Visit one today.

Hi Vicki, thank you for thinking of the library! We're not accepting donations at any library location at this time. The only Friends of the SC Public Libraries group that is currently accepting donations is the Capitola chapter. Please contact them directly about your donations. They do not take donations at the store. https://fscpl.org/book-sales/
The only Friends of the Library bookstore open at this time is the one in the mall operated the Friends of the Capitola Branch. You can find hours and info here: https://capitolalibraryfriends.org/bookstore1/index.html
Hi there, Out of an abundance of caution, we are quarantining returned items for 72 hours before staff handle those materials. Research indicates that this is adequate time for any live virus on materials to die. We are aslo working with a drastically reduced workforce at this time. The soonest any materials will be checked in is 3 days, and it could take a few more days depending on volume and staffing levels. Don't worry though, we won't be charging overdue fees!
Hi Juliet, We are not open on on MLK Jr. Day. Sorry if you were not notified. Diane
Hi Donna, Thanks for your interest in our Tales to Tails readng program! The dogs are trained therapy dogs from Furry Friends and Therapy Dogs International. We do have opportunities for people to become involved in the program as volunteers (without their own dogs). If you'd like to support the program as a volunteer, please get in touch with our Volunteer Office https://www.santacruzpl.org/volunteer/
Hi Lance, There are some benches outside with a lovely view of the lagoon and the wifi does extend beyond the building there. Diane
Yes, the library participates in the Monterey Bay Aquarium’s Shelf to Shore Program. This program provides free access for families who otherwise cannot afford to visit the Aquarium. Ask at your local library branch for a Shelf to Shore pass. The pass admits up to 6 family members for a visit on valid dates, one pass per year per adult library card holder. Valid dates do not include holidays, Spring break, or summer from the Friday before Memorial Day through Labor Day. A family might determine their eligibility if they qualify for Free School Lunch, WIC/SNAP, Meals on Wheels, Medi-Cal, Healthy Families, Healthy Kids, or other similar services.
Hi Bruce! All branches of SCPL accept book donations for the Friends of the Library book sale. Some branches have more space to handle donations than others, so you might want to call the branch you intend on donating to before dropping off the books. Usually one or two bags is the max at any one time. You can make an appointment with the Friends for larger donations to be received. More information about donating books and media can be found on the Friends of the Library website: https://fscpl.org/book-media-donations/
Mollie is correct. You can call us at 831-427-7713 or visit us at santacruzpl.org and log into your account with your library card and PIN/Password. We also have a mobile app called SCPL on the Go which you can find in the app store and on Google Play. Today we are upgrading our catalog software, so you won't have access to your account until that is complete.
If they dont, they may be able to request it from another branch. Good luck! Hope you find it! With God, all things are possible. Enjoy the book! : )
Hi Mary Ann, We have a reference librarian available at the Downtown Library service desk during all open hours.
