The only gas station in the Sumpter Valley Area for miles. Next closest gas stations are in Baker City. No swipe and go with a credit card. Just old style manual gas pumps. Diesel, propane gas, free air for tires and some hardware items also available. Load up on convenience store drinks and goodies before traveling the Elkhorn Scenic Byway Loop. Public restrooms and Volunteer Park located across Mill St. from Stage Stop Station.

It's ok John. As the story goes, Sumpter used to be called Ft. Sumter when it was founded in 1862 by gold prospectors from South Carolina and then later just Sumter before the Post Office required it's name to be changed in 1883. So the town's first U.S. Postmaster changed it to Sumpter in keeping close with it's original name and because of the pack mules carrying freight in at the time. Sumpter definition: pack animal, such as a mule or horse.
