Clean, well maintained park. Beautiful river. Saw pack of wild turkeys. The scenic overlook off route 2 was a good view. Did anyone lose a kitty backpack? Found at the River landing on route 2.

Great experience! Canoeing to the camp site was a thrill. I Wouldn't recommend kayaking or canoeing at night. Unfortunately me and my buddies lost daylight and we had to canoe at night with all our camp gear in a separate inflatable raft. Having knowledge and research on the river is a plus. Not recommended for those who have anxiety. The river is big and has a heavy undercurrent. You may be moving faster then you think.

Bring your bug spray! Keep a good pace if you’re going on these trails in summer or you will get eaten alive. Either you’re in the trees on a trail getting eaten alive or out in the sunlit trails getting cooked by the sun. Don’t worry the flies will follow you at least. I would LOVE to go back during a different season. It was very well kept & the picnic areas were great!

Went hiking during the Spring of 2019. Castle Rock State Park has a great collection of wildlife, especially birds, which makes the trip even more exciting. The trails were shorter than usual, but they were challenging and offered good views. The park is very clean, well maintained, and very accommodating. Only thing it could use are more brochures and maps for the actual park and not the parks surrounding it.

This are no campgrounds specifically at Castle Rock. There is a river access only campground by kyak or canoe south of Castle Rock. You may need a permit to for it's use. Check at the local IL DNR Office in Ogle County - west side entrance off Rt. 2.(ie. west of boat launch). Otherwise there's public campgrounds at Lowden State Park where the Black Hawk Statue is located north of the Oregon Dam on River Road. There's more campgrounds as well in the region as well but not on the river. Enjoy your time here no matter where you camp :)
All areas I've seen with posted times close at night.
You can download a free app called all trails.....it will tell you all about all the trails, how long the trails are and record you on the trails so you don't get lost. Have fun There are alot of trails .
Castle Rock Park north of the road has a couple pavilions to picnic at and some nice views but it's not on the river.
