Huge state park. Activities are spread out by some distance, trails, hiking, lake etc. Bummed out there was no swimming in the lake. Campground is really nice. Almost all sites are full hookup, and most are cement pull through.

This summer (2020) going here to go hiking on the trails was a great way to get out of the house and still stay socially distant from others. We went on 3 different trails there. Each great in there own way. One time we took our dogs out with us and they loved it. There's not just trails, there's the Volga Lake to fish from and there's trout streams all over there as well. Theres camping (we haven't done there since we don't live far from there). You can go horse back riding on some of the trails as well. So check them out and see what other things they may have to offer that I didn't mention ....oh and Heavens Winery is very close by as well check them out too.

Iowa is full of great geographical gems and this 5k + acre reserve is a top notch hiking, kayaking, canoe destination. This is a big equine area but I'm sure they won't mind you're there.

The park is very beautiful with lots of nice trails for horses or hiking (also saw some trails for bikes), beautiful river to kyak or canoe. Equestrian campground is very nice, except do not trust the website when looking for non-reservable campsites. They allow the non-reservable sites to be "reserved" or paid for without the person renting it to put up a tent or pull in a trailer--so when you get there, the sites look like they are available. It would be very helpful if the non-reservable sites were shown as taken and for how long. Best recommendation is to reserve a site. The DNR staff on site are very helpful. It would be great if the equestrian campground was bigger--they would be rented out!

It would be illegal to remove the gold from public land. Thanks!
Sorry that we weren't able to respond over the weekend. In the future, you can check here for updates - or call the office - before you head out: https://www.iowadnr.gov/Places-to-Go/State-Parks/Alerts-and-Closures
I don't remember but it is a horse park so if you don't care for the smell of nature shall we say I would not recommend it there.
