Even though it was a Friday, and the end of the month, it was extremely busy. The staff were quickly moving people through so the w azad it was tolerable .

If registering from out of state, go to the one in south Durham. Much more helpful and professional. This location talks very condescending to you 1st visit. The second one the clerk was nice up until I brought up an exemption for out of state vehicle purchase and the waiver if the tax was paid there 90 days or less. The clerk said the DMV website doesn’t have anything to do with them (the site simply states the law of NC…so the law isn’t what they go by) the manager was much worse, like talking to a child. Was combative right away before we even spoke face to face and would not help or explain it in any way. Her explanation was that she doesn’t care what South Carolina does (once again in reference to their state law, which states that they no longer charge vehicle tax as a “sales tax” but rather a “infrastructure maintenance fee” which was noted on the bill of sale). I also was instructed by the SC DMV to print the information out about the fee above to present it but without even looking at it, she said this document isn’t official so I can’t accept it. I asked her to look it up online then to what their definition of that tax is there and she said no I can’t and proceeded to more of this incident. It went from where on here, to show me where, to point to where it is and acted as if it wasn’t stated there. The end of it was that she doesn’t care, that’s how they do things there and I can try the Raleigh location. Gave me the number and I told her they haven’t been answering and she told me tough luck. I just moved here after serving the military 12 years and this is my first interaction with the state and it is terrible. Like I said though, go to the other location, much more polite, explained it to me and told me what I need to do.

The wait in line isnt terrible, it moves pretty quickly. I probably waited 15-20 minutes or so. The clerks were not friendly though. Especially this older man that works there. I was silently wishing I would not end up at his window. Fortunately I didnt but the lady helping me wasnt much better.

If you have a leased vehicle from out of state, I would avoid this office. They act annoyed and look at you like you’re silly when you arrive without all of the necessary paperwork. But then they are also vague about their instructions on what you’ll actually need! (FYI - you need power of attorney from your leasing company and a copy of the car’s title.). However, when I obtained these documents and brought them to my second visit, the office staff refused to accept an electronic copy of my title and insisted that I obtain a faxed physical copy of it instead - even though the state that I moved from only offers electronic titles! I ended up going to the other license plate office in the south east corner of Durham and they were were much kinder and patient with me. They also accepted my electronic title and didn’t require any sort of notary cash payment (as they do as this office location — don’t arrive without cash or you’ll have to use their ATM and pay a surcharge!). I’m sure this location is fine with other services but I certainly don’t recommend trying to register a leased car with them, especially a car from out of state. Such a frustrating experience!

For renewal you will need your plate # or drivers license and you insurance information. Provided there are no blocks on your account. For a new purchase you will need the above info as well as the title to the vehicle and if purchased at a dealer all the paper work they provided.
