We get to enjoy the Root Cellar almost once every weekend. Chef Sera is the best. The way she blends local, fresh foods with combinations you would not expect is incredible. I also love the menu changes often so we get to try different dishes all the time. She is a Food Master!!!!

The food is great- the owner is not so much. We were outside next door a few months back and were outside with our kids at their neighbor, house of hops. We turned on a heater for the kids. Root cafe was closed but the owner made sure to come out and reprimand us like we were the kids. She let us know the heaters were for customers. I mentioned that we used to come all the time.... when they used to actually be open. And actually came out intending to go there- but they were closed - again. She reiterated they were for their paying customers and did not invite us to continue using for the kids. I refuse to go back as good as they were. writing this post made me mad all over again and I honestly contemplate if 3 stars is too many 😑

This restaurant fills a much needed niche. How often does someone crave a really fantastic dinner but not want to get dressed up and go through the rigmarole of a fancy restaurant. Here you can come in shorts, get a good glass of wine , and have a spectacular meal in a very comfortable casual ambience. I wish they could come to Charlotte! Families, kids of all ages, and just an overall way to spend a nice summer night! Bar, variety of coffee , a nice outdoor patio, lots of seating, certainly checks all the boxes. Catfish is spectacular! Crab cakes delish! Actually we have been dining out more than we care to admit and these were best we’ve ever has. Will definitely be back. And online they have a variety of fully prepared take-out dinners. Vegan and Paleo as well.

We enjoyed this pivot to a simpler menu very much. The chicken sandwich and Vietnamese duck were excellent. There's space inside and out, and the outside is nicely warmed. It was good to come back to the space, we hadn't been in a while.
