Although neat to see, the ice cave was a bust. It was very cool in the cave, maybe low 40s and zero visible ice. Everything you read says it never rises above 31° and the pics they advertise must have been in the winter time. We drove a long way out of our way by almost 2 hours to be mislead.

This was amazing. The hike is beginners, the volcano is amazing and the ice cave is breath taking. The shop has everything you can think of. Highly recommend visiting here

One of the best stops we made on route 66! Very memorable. We reluctantly did the full loop walk of about 2 miles (one 76 yr old couple, one 50 yr old couple). It wasn't that bad! There are sitting benches along the way and beautiful scenery. Only a slight hill on the way up to the crater. A cool gift shop and museum too.

This place was absolutely awesome to see!! I was slightly disappointed that the ice cave wasn't as big as Google made it seem as I thought we'd be able to actually explore the cave deep inside. The temperature change was awesome to experience though and the view all around was not something you see everyday it was an awesome experience. The volcano was amazing to see however that hike to get to it may be short but the way up sure is tiring and no matter how bad you want to give up DONT!! You will NOT regret it I assure you!! The views are beautiful and the actual volcano is so neat to see. I've been trying to see this place since I was a kid and at 31 years old I'm really glad to say I've seen it and I loved it!! Plus the little gift shop has some awesome stuff and an adorable doggy that greets ya!

Hi Scott! The owners of the Ice Cave NM (my grandparents Dave and Reddy Candelaria) found evidence in the 1940s-60s that the Ancient Pueblo Indians (ancestors of the Hopi, Zuni and Acoma) used our cave about 800-1200 years ago. There were hockey sticks in the cave and Anasazi pottery in the surrounding lava beds in crevices. As far as the Navajo are concerned, they did know about the cave and volcano, naming them Sheep's Hogan and Winter Lake, but as far as we know they viewed the lava beds as taboo and wouldn't hike through them frequently - which we speculate is why their enemies, the peaceful Pueblo tribes, made them their home for a short time. That's just speculation though, whether or not the Navajo used the cave as well is uncertain but it's possible.
It is $12 for adults and teenagers 13 and up. For kids 6 to 12 it is $6 and free for kids under 6.
It's 12-$15 with a slight discount for military. I thought a good deal and a fun day. I can't see a pet making the steps to the ice cave. They are steep and not much room for others at the platforms. Have a blast.
No. The cave has a greenish hue from algae but that's it. Very beautiful though. And yes, very cold
