Nature preserves are awesome. Gotta love seeing wildlife in their natural environment.

Been coming here for over 40yrs. This place is great. You can go inside and see the breading process to preserve the great Salmon. In resent years the ladders and ponds have been rebuilt and upgraded. The staff is awesome, always willing to converse and answer any questions you might have.

This year (2017) was a low return year for fall Chinook (king) salmon returning to Battle Creek. Many fall Chinook salmon originating from Coleman NFH returned to the American River and they also returned to other rivers in the Sacramento Valley such as the Feather and Mokelumne Rivers. We will open the ladder to collect late-fall Chinook broodstock in late-December. Feel free to come out to the hatchery and take a look at how the run is doing in early 2018!
October is the month to see lots of adult Chinook in the creek. The return of the salmon festival is also in October, but it's not happening this year.
The hatchery is open daily, including holidays, and is free to visit. Enjoy!
