Jelks Preserve is a great place for a hike. There are multiple options and paths to take depending on how far/long you would like to walk. Most of the trails are wide open and clearly marked. There are a few off-shoots that will take you to the Myakka River. The views there are underwhelming. I wish the area was more open to get a better look at the river. Other than that, it was a positive experience for us.

The parking lot was full but I only saw one other person while walking throughout the preserve. I only scratched the surface in terms of exploring the trails. It was a beautiful day and totally peaceful. I'll definitely be back.

Great trails with fona and flora. No rest rooms available so be prepared with a spade and tissue to bury.

A nice natural area to walk. Not a particularly long trail and somewhat rutted in spots by the boars but it's nice to have parks kept natural.

According to the Sarasota County website: Park Hours: 6 a.m. to sunset The Preserve was established in 1999.
Gates close and don't open until about 4:00AM, something super early
Ash is right you have to walk about a mile in from the parking area. It's the very end of the trail. So I'm thinking artificial bait and catch and release. There is a small beach, I'm not sure how the fishing would be it looks pretty shallow. I'm guessing lots of catfish. Be careful casting because you are surrounded by a hammock full of trees. It would probably be easier to fish at El Jobean Bridge.
Blue Heron Creek is an actual dog park about a mile south of here
