This Paleontology Center is full of information about the John Day Fossil Beds. The displays are well made with lots of information. There is a short 10-15 minute video you can watch that explains how so many unusual creature fossils came to be in the area.

Great exhibit of fossils and bones from animals back 50,000 years ago. Also had displays showing tropical foliage and temperature changes. The cataclysmic occurrences through the time period. The hiking trails throughout the 3 units of the monument are spectacular and should not be missed if weather permits.

What a fun visit! Start with the visitor center and do the whole tour. There's a lot to learn before you do the hikes. Starting with an understanding of how the fossils were uncovered helps to make sense of what you're seeing when you're making your way up the hiking trail. There is a bit of a climb up to see the fossils and experience the search locations yourself.
