This is my favorite deli in San Diego for two reasons: The Honey Bee and Gaslamp Elite are the two best sandwiches in the city and no place has a friendlier staff. I could end my review right there, but everyone should know about how Grapes & Hops helped San Diego Pride in its first year back after the pandemic. Due to employees calling out sick, a vendor who was supposed to provide lunch for the volunteers pulled out at the last minute. I called Joe, the owner, to see if Grapes and Hops could fill an order for 400 sandwiches with just a couple days' notice. He enthusiastically jumped in, provided the excellent customer service he always does and saved the day. I'm a big fan of supporting local businesses who support their community right back. Joe and his team are awesome!

New to the area and figured we would give this little deli a try. I didn't expect much, but I wasn't happy with what I got. I got an Italian sandwhich, and it had decent amount of meat on it, and 2 small spinach leaves, followed by hardest any cheese. The bread (had a onion hoagie roll) had a squirt of Italian salad dressing on it and was dry. My wife ordered the New York nod that was pastrami and swiss, they choose a pretzel roll. What she got was a measley pretzel roll with one slice of pastrami and one slice of swiss hardly any sour kraut and lathered in mustard. Neither of these sandwhiches was worth the $12 for them, $15 if you got the $2 snack size chip. Great liquor store for Downtown, but skip the food.

I hate leaving bad reviews, but I mean cmon. I paid for a Ruben, and I got a cold, dry, sauerkraut sandwich with a single slice of pastrami. Not to mention the bread is stale and crumbling. Don’t order the Ruben. 🤦🏼♀️

It looks like just an ordinary liquor store if you pass by, but if that's what you do, pass by, you'll have missed downtown's best sandwich shop. You may note the Boar's Head logo signifying quality meats are used. That's just the beginning. The big assortment of freshly baked breads (try the rosemary roll) makes an even bigger difference. The salads are bomb too. All this comes with neighborly customer service, and a wine and premium liquor selection that will delight the most discriminating connoisseurs. So glad I found this place!
