It was quite fun and beautiful. You get to see giant petrified stumps and there is a really interesting museum in the visitor center. I recommend going on a cooler day because there's lots of hiking trails to go on.

Amazing National Monument that is part of the National Park System. This place is very well kept, quiet, has tons of history, has an excellent visitor center, and lots of petrified stumps, fun critters to find, and lovely wildflowers. Please do not miss out on this tranquil place.

Trails for days! There are trails around the petrified stumps and trails that go everywhere in the park. Anyone can find some fun here. We did the half mile loop with a toddler at an easy pace.

Fun place with lots to learn and well maintained trails. It was a slow day so I only spotted one other group on the trails the whole day. Very peaceful walks with a great view of pikes peak over the forest. Lots of information boards are posted around so you can learn as you walk. Paths are well marked and a few benches around if you need a quick rest. It's a great place to visit if you like the outdoors and history lessons. I enjoyed it but don't see myself coming back any time soon since it was a smaller park. Feels very one-and-done for the average tourist.

Yes. It's not a widely popular National Monument, so their small parking lot doesn't get very full.

We have a park pass/military pass, if we park in the lot and go hike the trails, where can we park in case we miss the 6pm deadline so our car is not locked in?

Unfortunately there is no place to park that doesn't have a gate on it, at least near the visitor center. The Hornbek house doesn't have a gate on it and it has a wildlife trail that eventually connects to all the trails, but it is a 1.6 mile hike back to your car.
