The Old Point Loma lighthouse is well cared for and offers a glimpse into the past when people had to keep the lights on. You are able to go inside the lighthouse and see what it was like to be a light keeper in the early 1900s. Saddly, you are not able to go all the way up to the balcony around the light. The grounds outside of the lighthouse have a garden and information plaques on the different areas of the lighthouse. The old lighthouse keeps cottage has a timeline of operation as well as the old gas light. This is a lot bigger than you would imagine for just making a light for ships to use to find their way home.

The Cabrillo National Monument and Old Point Loma Lighthouse are a great choice if the family is looking for an interesting outdoor activity for a few hours, or if you want to take in an outstanding panoramic ocean view from the tip of the peninsula, or if you like to learn and explore San Diego history. The wait to get in seems unnecessarily long, but parking is adequate and you have the option to get a little exercise walking up to the Lighthouse from the visitors center, or driving up to a 2nd lot up top. There is nothing super fancy about it, and the Lighthouse is rather small, which is the only reason it's 4 stars rather than 5.

Located in Cabrillo National Monument this is a beautifully restored late 19th century lighthouse. There are numerous hiking trails, a visitor center complete with restrooms, and interpretive exhibits throughout the area. Driving down toward the western shore of Point Loma you will encounter several tide pools that may have interesting sea life at low tide. I recommend visiting about 30 minutes before low tide to have the best chance at seeing things.

Entrance to the park costs money - $ 20 per car (very expensive, the park is very small). You should arrive towards sunset and watch the amazing sunset on the west side of the park (under the lighthouse). On the east side there is a stunning view of San Diego. Near the lighthouse there is a small museum (no extra charge required). There is no observation from the lighthouse itself. There are also tide pools on site where you can see fish and crabs.

Yes, you can walk the ground on your own.
Not in the area around the lighthouse. You can leave them in the car. We brought the dog on leash down to the tide pools section of the park.
The Lighthouse and museum is actually open. I was there this past 5/2 (sunday)
Yes, hours should be posted on google. I went around the noon hour, on a Tuesday. Not busy at all
Point Loma closes at 5:00pm.
No there is not.
You drive through the San Diego Navel Base to get to Point Loma so you cannot stay right by Point Loma . You are in San Diego and there are a lot of places to stay . Harbor Island is probably the closest.
Don't know. If it's a National Park Pass just present it at the gate. It covers anyone in your vehicle. If you're biking or walking, who the pass covers might be answered at NP site online.
