5 stars because the end is awesome but getting there was precarious. Rocky trails, river crossings, and few trail markers (but little incline). Keep with the river, when you see graffiti and trash you know youβre getting close. We went early on a Sunday morning and saw few people until we were headed back. Itβs well worth it for the falls and swimming hole at the end. *Check for closings dates in August & September 2022 for trail updates*

Gorgeous. Totally worth the drive from Fredericksburg! The trail was getting a bit overgrown so donβt forget the bug/tick spray. Numerous creek crossings so prepare to potentially get wet feet. Pack in a meal, gorgeous place to spend some time basking in the sun and swimming. Several swimming spots. Terrain is very rocky (only rock in some spots) with a few small rock scrambles. Great for all ages, not overly technical and very minimal elevation gain. Several camping sites available.

Oh I loved the little swimming spots along the way which were so tempting I simply stopped and dunked myself several times on my way to the top! The trail to the main swimming hole is along the river, and its a hiking trail so you'll need hiking shoes if you want to be kind to your feet; but be prepared to take them off a time or 2 in order to cross the river. There were spots where it seemed the trail just disappeared but if you look up accross the river, it usually continues from there. The final swimming hole at the top, with the little waterfalls was just loads of fun but I certainly overdid it with the swimming and forgot that I had to hike backπ ; I almost kissed the ground when I arrived back at the parking lot, coz my arms and legs were so fatigued and jelly-like that I was ready to be airlifted if I had to go any further! But note that there's no network at all throughout so be prepared to go really off-grid. Carry loads of snacks and drinking water. Although the river water is very clear, if you look closely you can see some green algae particles floating around so NOT for drinking. I met some guys at the top who were attempting to scale the cliff with ropes, which I guess you can do if you're into rock climbing and stuff, but there's a roundabout way which you can take if you want to continue the hike, otherwise the swimming hole would be a great place to turn back. Overall this is a great place for a good cardio workout and green scenic views in Virginia.

Nice moderate hike. Be aware that there are water crossings involved. I recommend it.

Yes parking is free... get there early though. We stay at the camp behind the parking lot on the river. AWESOME spot. I want to add that once your in the trail and you've crossed the river 3 times you'll go up a little trail after the 3rd crossing then go left... you'll come to a camp and 2 boulders in the middle of the trail. If you make a right and go up an overgrown hill stay on that trail and it will bring you pass more waterfalls with swimming holes. More camping spots and keep on the trail youll eventually cross the river again and end up at another camp. AWESOME spot. We DID see a bobcat back there twice (same guy) within 2 hour time frame. My dog chased him the first time (scary) then after we had lunch, on the way back down the bobcat ran in front of us on the trail. SO I also want to add that if you don't go up the hill where I told you and you go straight instead that will eventually bring you to a small slide like waterfall and a swimming hole (small) but VERY COOL!
Saint Mary's Trail.
Yes. Be mindful of weather conditions. Thunderstorms may cause the river to rise rapidly. Can't wait to go back!! It's beautiful there!!
There are multiple free sites available there. No facilities though. Its roughing it camping. If you want a campground nearby there is one approximately 3 miles on the same road.
No way! The horse wouldn't make it through the first 1/4 mile of the trail
The path we took was 5.4 miles total. A few spots we had to watch our step but the overall hike was relatively easy! Look it up and keep the river near you!
