Walking Sands Rest Area

An older rest area. Many people stop here daily. Very clean. Cleaned daily with plenty of toilet paper in the morning. I suggest you bring your own in the evening. Their are shelters you can walk or roll up to if your handicapped. Their are picnic tables inside each one, handicapped accessible. Their are bathrooms available at the bottom level and the top level. Their is a nice view of the Rio Grande Valley that travelers photograph. Their are no public phones or vending machines. Their is a drinking fountain on the bottom level between the two bathrooms. Their are Official Scenic Historical Markers and Points of Interest. Parking is available 24 hours if needed. A nice place to visit nearby is Sevilleta National Wildlife Refuge and Kiva RV Park and Horse Motel is nearby at US 60 East.

Good rest stop. Bathrooms were relatively clean so that’s a plus. This rest stop is very unique and does not look like any rest stops I have been to. The views are incredible! I went during the day so I don’t know what it looks like at night. If you need to stop and take a break from driving I’d stop here.

It's a good rest area. I like rest areas where the DOT has tried to make it unique, and this is one such rest area. The picnic tables are enclosed in cabins, and the whole thing is on stilts. The restrooms themselves were clean. Good stop.

No phones or vending machines (but who needs those?!) they do have covered picnic tables and clean restrooms. Good place to stop and relax on a long drive. It’s a good place to rest when you’re driving between Las Cruces and Albuquerque.
