Beautiful views of lava fields below. Fun bluff to climb around on the rocks. Was very windy when we visited; almost lose your footing between footsteps!

Beautiful! Be aware the 1.5mile road is packed gravel but safe. Gorgeous unbelievable views. Make a stop at the main Ranger Station for very clean restrooms & helpful information for your adventure.

Off the beaten path but so worth it if you like tranquil places to explore. It's only one mile and a half from the road so you can visit this place and get going in no time.

One of my favorite places. El Malpais National Monument, which includes the Sandstone Bluffs where these photos were taken. Lots of volcanic features including extensive lava flows, lava tubes, and a chain of volcanos bordering the west side running north-south along the Continental Divide.

Webster's Dictionary defines a bluff as a, “high steep bank” or cliff. Sandstone is defined as, “a sedimentary rock consisting of usually quartz sand united by some cement (such as silica or calcium carbonate).” Therefore, a sandstone bluff is a rock cliff. For more information about the bluffs that overlook the lava field at El Malpais National Monument, visit: https://www.nps.gov/elma/planyourvisit/sandstone-bluffs-overlook.htm.
