You are entitled to the “fair market value” or the “actual cash value” of your vehicle. Generally, the insurance company is trying to determine what your car was worth immediately before the accident. Once they make an offer, it is up to you to either accept their offer, or show them why your car is worth more money. Insurance companies now typically may hire an independent appraisal company to determine the fair market value of your vehicle, and you will be forwarded a copy of the appraisal. If you think your car is worth more than the appraised value, check online for the sales prices of the same make and model vehicle as yours. Copy the ads and send them to the insurance adjuster. If you believe the insurance company’s offer is still too low, consider speaking with an attorney.
