Truly a scummy business with underhanded business tactics. If you're so desperate to make money that you charge unwilling customers, maybe it's time to close shop.

Whatever you do, do not give the San Diego Union Tribune your credit card number. I signed up several months ago for a free 1-month subscription. Though I should have known better, the salesperson took my credit card number saying that it would not be billed without my go-ahead. I have never received a paper, but I have been billed every month since. I tried cancelling every month, but sat on the phone on hold, sometimes for hours, each time. I never got through. I tried cancelling my credit card, yet somehow they were able to bill my new credit card number. I have no idea how to get these people to stop billing me without my consent. It should be against the law to make it this difficult to cancel a subscription. It is unethical, predatory, and exploitive.

Do not sign up for anything with your credit card. They do automatic enrollment and make it impossible to get your money back. I have been on hold for 40 minutes with no end in sight.

The Union Tribune newspaper is a thief. I had a subscription that was on an automatic renewal with my credit card. I discovered that my card was being charged every 5 months instead of 6 months. When I called to question the billing department, I was told that there could be up to 10 special editions of the newspaper each year. There was an extra charge for these special editions. The paper would bill a month early rather than at 6 months to cover the cost of these special editions. I was never informed of this. So I cancelled my subscription which had already been billed to my credit card. The UT refused to credit my card for the balance of over $142. Instead they claimed they would send a check to me for the refund. That was more than 2 months ago and 4 phone calls. The UT is lying about issuing my refund. Do not ever use the autopay feature with this newspaper! The UT will keep your money as a good thief always does!
