Enjoyed the beautiful day. The Avery is closed. The otters were hiding. Everything else was great! The California Sea Lions and harbor seals put on a good show.

Went here as a child and now came back with my own daughter. It’s way better than what I remembered Such an awesome place for kids to learn about marine science. Our favorite activity was the tsunami wave simulation to see if our buildings survived (they didn’t) Highly recommend this place for young kids and if you are looking for a hour activity on a cold rainy day at the coast.

We had SO much fun! I planned a low-cost beach trip for my friend and I and this was easily one of our favorite activities. The museum is free, but donations are appreciated and available by cash and card near the entrance. The museum is small, but packed with cool stuff. There is a touch tide pool, wave simulations, and a new baby octopus! I spent an extensive amount of time playing in the touch tide pool. And the photo opportunities were unreal! I'll be back soon, and if you go to see Newport, you have to stop here.

No cover charge but they have a donation bin where you can donate. It's an extension of Oregon State University, donate if able but don't be discouraged if you're not able. The message and Science education is why they are there.

What were those pickle shaped critters off the Oregon coast? Is this a result of global warming? Is there a threat to local fish stocks?

John Newby | Aug 21, 2018
Kelly Hansen | Aug 21, 2018

Depending on how it is looked at, these recently introduced organisms could have an effect on local fish stocks. These bizarre organisms, called pyrosomes (Pyrosoma atlanticum), began appearing off Oregon's coast in 2015, but in recent months, their numbers have multiplied into the millions, NOAA's Northwest Fisheries Science Center in Newport, Oregon, reported A 5-minute midwater tow with a research net off Oregon's Columbia River in late May captured roughly 60,000 pyrosomes. The scientists who caught them had been looking for a rare fish, and had to spend hours sorting through the pyrosomes until they found their target, they said
