We have camped @ Sage Creek twice. Both times we have driven our SUV & towed 28 ft travel travel. The road is scenic & does have some washboard areas. We've seen Bison each time. There are no services, just quiet majestic beauty.

I have stayed a few nights at Sage Creek Campground and it has become one of my favorite places to camp by far. This is not because of luxury or the normal camping experience. Instead, it is because of the unique experience Sage Creek provides. Not only is the camping free but waking up at this campground is like taking a step into the past, with buffalo nearby and the badlands in the distance. Truly one of the most unique places to camp!

Don’t wanna say much but you’ll just have to come here and experience it for yourself. Some advice: I got here around 1:30pm and managed to get the last spot with a cover over the picnic table. Five minutes later some other campers come in and have to settle for a spot without shade. That makes A HUGE DIFFERENCE. I was able to hang out some laundry. The other people in the camp were so nice, it was truly a small community. RV people (small RVs and vans) parked respectfully and the larger RVs (only one or two) parked where there’s overflow and that worked really well for spacing. Tons of hikes from the camp. Tons of wildlife. Literally one of the best memories of my life. Don’t come out here without getting everything you need. Water, gas, snacks, whatever. Even though it’s primitive, rangers still made their rounds checking in on the camp every so often, which I personally prefer. After staying here we moved west to black hills.

No water. No campfires. A great place to stay. This spot has tables, outhouses and trash cans. Not much else. However the spot is conveniently located in the "armpit" of Badlands national Park and easy driving distance from nearby Wall and Interior, SD. Both places you can get food and groceries. Campground is a big loop in some bottomlands near a creek. There's a town of prairie dogs and buffalo roam around. Watch your dog and keep 'em leashed up. We stayed here two nights because it's centrally located in the park. It's also quiet and reasonably secluded. A great place to boondock! 👍

Are we able to have a campfire? Is there fire rings in place or anything?

No fires. We were just there last week and had a fabulous time. Make sure you get there early in the day to get a site. A herd of bachelor bison were hanging out in the campground the whole time we were there. So much fun to watch!

How long is the gravel road to campground? And what’s the condition??

It is indeed quite a long ride, I think the mentioned 30 minutes seems about right. As for conditions, our tire actually flattened due to the potholes, so make sure to drive very carefully!

Are reservations needed ? (We plan to visit in mid-August)

Renaud Genest | Dec 28, 2018
Eric Nystrom | Dec 29, 2018

This campground is all first-come first-serve. There are no specifically defined campsites, so if it gets crowded people just sort of squeeze in. The other campground in Badlands National Park (Cedar Pass) does take reservations I believe, and there are a couple of private campgrounds outside the park near Cedar Pass.

running water,& cabins

No running water or cabins. This is a primative campground. The only amenities are vault toilets and picnic tables with covers.
