Questhaven Retreat is one of the hidden treasures of Northern San Diego County! I discovered it many years ago when I lived just down the road, and it has become more precious as the population expands and wilderness areas become increasingly scarce. Located in a secluded valley in a rural area of San Marcos, Questhaven is a wildlife preserve, a spiritual retreat center and a peaceful place where those who love God and nature can find rest, reflection, comfort and inspiration.

I grew up in that area. We had a 20 acre horse ranch. Spent many days hiking or riding our horses through the back of Olivenhain. End of Fortuna Ranch Road. Out by Hippy Valley, past the old holes (Like cave openings) in the mountains that were the old Copper mines, past Painted Mountain. I remember them blasting the water line through in the '70's up on Painted Mountain. It is really sad to learn the history, that the Gypsies settled there and were driven out and/or murdered without due process. The lady in White's husband and son were sheep herders murdered by cattle ranchers but I guess that was closer to Questhaven. Also, I guess in the 1800's there had been an insane asylum that burned down with some patients running into the brush on fire so their ghosts are out there. After that they closed the asylum and I guess Flower Newhouse got a great deal on the property. (It is the Questhaven Retreat) . Quite a colorful history. When we moved out there I didn't think anyone had lived out there before. I only got really good vibes hiking and camping out there. Even when we would stay the night. We definitely saw the huge circle in Hippy Vally where about 50 people had met. A big circle with rocks and in the center, a huge fire had been burnt. There also was a strange sign that was there warning people to stay out. That the devil resided there. But we ignored it and spent some really cool days and nights there.
