The nine-mile canyon is the interesting and unusual place by itself. According to Wiki, there are at least an estimated 1,000 rock art sites in the canyon, with more than 10,000 individual images... And the Great Hunt is probably the biggest, the best known, and well preserved among all of them.

Incredible place to go for a day or more. So many trails, pictographs to see and endless roads to ride bikes on. Not very populated so you won't see many people...you're missing out if you've never been here. Take the time to stop you won't be disappointed.

The walkway from the parking lot up to the panel is about 100 yards and has big rocks placed along it, so my 3 kids (ages 9, 4, and 2) enjoyed climbing and jumping on them. There's and info plaque at the petroglyphs, which my bookworm child loved reading. There are other interesting petroglyphs near the main panel, as well as some disappointing vandalism. Our kids loved getting outside for an adventure and this was a quick but fun stop while touring Nine Mile Canyon.

It is one of the best places to view petroglyphs and pictographs in the United States. Get a map of the 46 mile canyon or download one for offline use as there is no cell service. There are several places where people have vandalized the areas with names or fake petroglyphs.

Questions & Answers

Is the canyon closed for the winter?

I would imagine so. Although it is not maintained by anyone. There is no gate blocking it off. You could call the people that own 9 Mile Ranch to see if they know.

What kind of road to nine mile canyon? Paved or dirt?

It just got paved in 2014. However, you have to enter in from the south (Wellington). If you enter from the north (Wellsdraw), it is not paved and gets contantly washed out.
