Great historic 3 mile train ride featuring awesome views of casco bay. Conductor and engineer were knowledgable and took the time to explain technical questions from experienced bluffs and little kids alike. Museum/gift shop was nice and well stocked with exhibits and souvenirs. Ticket price ($12.00) was well worth it for this great family friendly outing and cost was mostly offset by ample free parking at the museum. Take the day and explore well kept and scenic Portland trails or rent a kayak and see the bay. All are a short walk from the museum. This is one of the best bargains in the Portland area for sure!

The Maine Narrow Gauge Railroad is an amazing attraction and a must visit destination of Portland, Maine. When vacationing in Maine in the month of May of 2022, I brought and treated my wife and myself for a tour & train ride on the locomotive operated by the Main Narrow Gauge Railroad. We both found our time on the train to be fun and relaxing and were very much welcomed and courteously treated by the train’s staff. The highlight of our trip were the breathtaking views of the gorgeous Casco Bay, and the sights of beautiful boats and cruises. Both my wife and I also had the good fortune to visit and view the train driver’s compartment and to our delight, had the chance to operate the train horn. When visiting Maine, we definitely recommend a hop on the train with the Maine Narrow Gauge Railroad!!!

Even though the trip is very short - 30 minutes - I enjoyed it. The guide was interesting and informative. The big disappointment was that it was not the steam train. We were on a diesel locomotive. Steam trains run when they find a crew that knows how to run steam trains, which is not all that easy.

For such a short ride it was so worth it for the price. The history lesson behind the railway and the bridge were wonderful. We appreciated that the conductor was in costume, super knowledgeable and wiling to answers questions. Would definitely recommend this for the train enthusiasts.

What is the relationship between this museum and the other one in Phillips, Maine? I see that you have the Rangeley lakes cars. Did the narrow gauge run down east as well?

As far as I know, they are separate entities.

The train runs multiple times a day and there are a lot of seats. You should be okay. There still might be road construction going on so Google maps and GPS might be off on location.

Are school buses and greyhound buses allowed to park or no?

A school bus would probably fit in the parking lot but a Greyhound might have to park elsewhere. Hope that helped! 🙂

Is there a display of a Japanese bullet train?

I don't think so. I only spent 20 minutes or so in the museum (before it closed). But I think the displays were primarily old fashioned trains, trains used the USA, and the narrow gauge train.
