If you are looking for shade and woodland plants, Sebright Gardens is one of your best options in the area. If you are seeking hostas, they are your number one option in Oregon, and maybe anywhere! Seriously, I started to try to pick some out, but I didn't have a lot of spare time, so decided I'd better return when I had a couple hours. They, no exaggeration, have 500+ varieties! In addition to the absolutely insane amount of hostas, they also had more varieties of ferns, astilbe and epimedium than I have ever seen gathered in one place. I quickly filled a basket with my selections, then loped along, arms overflowing with additional plants that didn't fit. There were a couple customers in line as I was paying, and we all laughed about trying to limit your purchases by only using a basket. Learn from my mistakes and opt for the carts! Anyways, I ended up with a beautiful golden geum, three hardy fuchsias, two yellow wonder strawberries, a red (Valentine) bleeding heart, striped lily of the valley, a hardy begonia, and dancing geisha dianthus. They had all the kooky, fun plant varieties that I am always seeking, in addition to their more standard counterparts. They also had limited bushes and trees, and some pretty display gardens and landscaping to serve as inspiration. Prices are comparable to other nurseries, in some cases lower. The gentleman who assisted me at checkout was friendly and nice, and Sebright just felt like such a pleasant place to shop as all the customers were so sweet and echoed excitement about everyone else's finds in addition to their own. Sebrights are my favorite chickens. Just look one up and tell me they aren't the cutest! You know this nursery must be good if they share a moniker. Lastly, while they don't have a specific date they open for the season each year, for 2022 it was the end of March, and they said that is about in line with what they normally do. So if you get a hankerin' for some early spring gardening they are ready for ya!

Gorgeous gardens! My word they do a good job! There should be a Gardeners' World special on this place, Monty Don would be pleasantly surprised to visit. Fabulous quality plants and good place to spy on what other people are shopping for to get some ideas. Horticultural paradise. Of course, they have stellar hostas. Ferns! I like the humpback whale hostas and woodwardia fimbriata. I may be partial to the humpbacks because I lived in Waikiki and loved seeing whales near the coast from Diamond Head. I have never seen such an extensive collection of epimediums in my life. What started out puzzling to me turned into the sort of gardening I prefer. I adore shade plants. I started with a huechera, a funny leafy burgundy reddish thing that I didn't know much about but when it bloomed and was the most resilient stalwart plant all year, in hot summer or cold winter, it won me over to the shady side. Plus the hummingbirds visit them. They have fantastic huecheras here. I don't think I saw camellias or hydrangea arborescens, I did see hydrangea macrophylla but I don't prefer them. I got a corydalis flexuosa 'Porcelain Blue' though I love the corydalis curviflora subsp. rosthornii 'Blue Heron' too, I had to choose one for now because I have a tiny balcony. Gardenia jasminoides 'Crown Jewel' was a surprise find. Found some amazing bletilla striata too. Very pretty pulmonaria. Everything is outstanding. I am the flowery type and I especially like fragrance, my partner loves foliage, texture, and evergreens. He was also happy here. We've seen all kinds of gardens here in the Pacific Northwest, in Hawai'i, California, and New Zealand. He said he likes the shade garden best of all. Sebright Gardens is a wonderful place to revisit time and time again throughout the seasons. We love it here.

I have two beautiful hostas but they are getting too big for the location. I need to cut them back (smaller in size). What is the best way of doing this without damaging my plants???

Divide with a sharp, clean (wipe with rubbing alcohol) shovel. There are also trowels that have cutting edges. Alternatively, dig out the whole plant with tubers, and separate, pull apart the tubers until you.get the size you want. And give away the rest (to me! 😆).

How can I keep snails and slugs off my hostas ?

If you spray them with glyphosate, they won't be very attractive any more ;-)
