Peaceful and beautiful, mostly shaded ride with views of the reservoir. It has a gentle slope from. The Woodstock dam parking lot.

New to the area and rode this trail after seeing it online. I was skeptical of it not being paved but it was honestly in better shape than most paved trails I’ve ridden. There’s plenty of parking, wonderful views, smooth surface and you feel totally isolated most of the ride. Lots of people walking dogs, but once you get further from the trailhead it really clears up. I’d recommend it to anyone, regardless of cycling ability.

Thank you for opening this great rail trail. Beautiful scenery, nice information signs, great parking lot. Trail was well done, rolled crushed stone. Great for walking or biking. Cant wait to xcountry ski. Lots of benches to take a break. This is a great trail to country ski.

Excellent rail trail to come for a walk or bike ride. Wide and maintained. Shady for hot sunny days. Plenty of parking on all 3 parking lots. There is parking on both ends and middle of the trail. Incredible views several bridges with wide river crossing. Easy bike ride no hills. Bring kids or come and visit if you are in the area. You would not be disappointed.

You are correct. Visitors are prohibited from leaving the trail unless they have a DEP Access Permit and are fishing or hunting. The DEP has begun issuing warnings and tickets, and we will speak with them to let them know that additional enforcement is needed. The Trail Steward volunteers work to stop such trespass issues when they catch people as well.
Yes. DEP Access Permit holders are allowed to leave the trail for fishing and hunting.
The trail has been under construction since January 2018 and was partially opened on October 18, 2019. We anticipate that all of the ART will be open by Thanksgiving.
NYCDEP and DEC as well as local police.
The parking area in Shokan (known as Ashokan Station Trailhead) is under construction and will not open until November 20th. The trailhead is across from Mountain Road on Route 28, and the address will be 3045 NY-28, Shokan, NY.
You would need to get a DEP Access Permit and NYS Fishing License. For more information, please see: www.nyc.gov/dep/recreation
Not really. I'm sure police and park rangers patrol the trail every now and then.
