IMAX is designed to fill more of your field of view with image than a conventional theatre. In the larger IMAX theatres, this is done by using a really large screen (e.g. 80–100 feet wide) with a steep seating deck that is relatively close to the screen. If you’re sitting in the middle of the seating area in an IMAX theatre, the screen probably covers a 90 degree angle horizontally, which pushes the edge of the image out far enough that you are more likely to feel like you are part of the scene, not merely watching images on a screen.
